THE SPRINGBOKS

NEWCASTLE OVERWHELMED ANOTHER HEAVY GROUND Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright NEWCASTLE, June 30. The Springboks to-day defeated a Newcastle fifteen by 58 points to 8. The Newcastle fifteen included two Sydney players, M'Laughlin and Turnbull, who have represented New South Wales in recent years, and also three other former State players. The Springboks dominated play after the first 10 minutes, during which seven penalties were awarded against them. The South Africans scored 16 tries, only five being converted by Turner, who had many difficult kicks. Half the tries were scored by the forwards, furnishing evidence of the manner in which' they backed up, especially from cross kicks by the wingers. 7 Despite tho fact that the pack was deprived of a back-row forward after tho left wing three-quarter, Broodryk, was injured shortly before the interval and Vandenberg was withdrawn from the forwards to play on the wing, the ball was won in the scrums and lineouts with monotonous frequency, and, having overcome their early tendency to infringe the rules, the South African backs and heavy forwards combined and handled splendidly, crushing their lighter opponents. It was the Springboks’ fifth successive match on a muddy ground, heavy rain having fallen in tho morning, but they were obviously keen to create a good impression. They threw the ball about, these tactics being in contrast with those in Saturday’s test. Lochner, Harris, Jennings, and Martin, who had previously played only once on the tour, all shaped well, especially Lochner, a utility back who was playing at half-back. He made several clever thrusts. Hofmeyr, at centre, and Turner, who started at full-back, but who in the second half was moved to the right wing, were also attractive backs. Boy Louw and Sheriff were great forwards. The tourists had a crop of minor injuries. Broodryk bruised a shoulder muscle. Williams, who changed places with Turner in the second half, suffered a slight leg injury, but the only serious casualty at present is du Toit. _ Tries were scored for the winners by Bergh (3), Broodryk (3), Louw (2), Turner (2), Williams, Martin. Sheriff, Vandenberg, Babrow, and Jennings. Turner converted five tries.

The Springboks departed for Brisbane to-night. '
