AMENITIES SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS The forty-eighth annual meeting of the Dunedin Amenities Society was held in tho Council Chamber yesterday afternoon, Mr Crosby Morris presiding. Moving tho adoption of the report and balance sheet, Mr Morris said the report was more comprehensive than in former years, and he trusted members appoved of the work done by the committee. Much could bo done by a continuation of the Arbor Day tree planting and the addresses to school pupils. The principal work now before the society was tho improvement of the children’s playground at St. Clair. The St. Clair Improvement Society had joined hands -with them, and the work would be gone on with. St. Clair was an asset to tho city, yet all must have been struck with the unsightliness of the playground. When Mr Arthur Salmond’s plans were carried out the ground would be a token of the work the society was doing. Queen’s Gardens were being defaced by the devious tracks being worn across the lawns, and it was suggested that a flower border should bo built along the High street frontage. Flower borders could be profitably made in other parts of the city. A shortage of garden seats in the reserves was noted, and he appealed to public-spirited citizens to give seats. Dealing with the society’s finances, Mr Morris said the ordinary revenue amounted to £6O a year, and the society could not do much with that amount. A sum of £SOO was in hand from bequests and subscriptions, and it was good that funds should be available for the carrying out of largo works, one of which —the planting of trees on the approaches, north and south, to tho city—would ho shortly undertaken. Mr J. L. Salmond seconded the motion. Mr G. Crow regretted that greater assistance was not being given tho society by the public. It was not creditable that for work of such importance tho revenue amounted to no more than £6O annually, A membership campaign should ho undertaken, he suggested. Following a discussion, the motion was carried. OFFICERS ELECTED. Officers were elected as follow: Patron, Hon. W. Downie Stewart; president, Mr Croshv Morris; vice-presi-dent. Mr J. L.
