A MINISTER'S COMPARISONS
NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA Since his return from New Zealand, the Minister of Labour (Mr Mackrell) has become a valuable advertiser of the scenic, social, and industrial amenities of the sister Dominion (states the Melbourne ‘Age His luncheon address to the Victorian Centenary Club showed that he has been captivated by the beauty of the country, and also with the hospitality that was accorded Mrs Mackrell and him by the New Zealand Government. In social legislation he regards Victoria as being ahead of Now Zealand, but New Zealand’s butter was “ beyond compare ; ” which he attributes to the splendid average annual rainfall of 50in, the remarkable fertility of the soil, and the rich pastures. The butter factories were close together, and only the richest cream was used, he said Freezing works were close to each other, which minimised transport and the consequent loss in weight of sheep. The whole Dominion was well organised. Even matters of wealth 'and did not escape Mr Mackrell’s discerning eye, and although he has acquaintance with-ten millionaires in Melbourne, he firmly believes that New Zealand is much better situated, with an apparently higher average distribution of wealth than exists in Australia.
