A FATHER OBJECTED
A MARRIAGE PREVENTED A young man and a girl, their eye* shining, laughter on their lips, walked up the steps of Chelsea Register Office recently. , . They had eloped from Belgium from the ire of a father to marry in Lon*, don. There was a few minutes to spare be. fore they were duo to stand side by side in front of the registrar. - Behind them in the street a taxi door banged. A solicitor quickly followed them up the steps bearing a caveat on behalf of the young man’s father. The solicitor lodged his protest with the registrar, who had no option bub to refuse to carry on with the ceremony, Down the steps again came the couple, the girl weeping bitterly, the young man ill-tempered and confused., So ended the second attempt of, Andre Charles von Acker, 23-year-old law student, and Marie Jose . Tichant, ; aged 21, daughter of a Belgian, cigar merchant, to get married. - ■> By Belgian law young von Acker, be* ing under 25, is still a minor over whom his father has certain legal powers. The caveat stated that the son wa* due for military service, that he had not completed his law studies, and wa> not of ago. The couple at first planned to marry in Belgium, but the father raised ah objection. ‘ . When they left the register office they drove to Somerset House to lodge an appeal. • Then they returned to their hotel m Russell Square, where Mile.
