VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS
POLISH ARCHBISHOP'S ACT MARSHAL PILSUDSKI'S COFFIN REMOVED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright CRACOW (Poland), June 25. Violent demonstrations wore staged outside the Palace of the Papal Nuncio when thousands of people demanded the immediate dismissal of the Archbishop of Cracow (Monsignor Sapieha) for removing the heavy silver coffin containing the remains of Marshal Pilsudski from the Tomb of Kings in the cathedral in defiance of the President of Poland. Police reserves have been ordered out, and a strike is expected. It is reported that the Pope has ordered an investigation owing to the threatened rift between the State and the church. The coffin was removed when the archbishop learned that King Carol of Rumania was to place a wreath on Marshal Pilsudski’s tomb. King Carol is due to arrive at Cracow to-morrow. It is understood that the archbishop’s decision was due, not only to the fact that the King is not a Catholic, but also to his private life. A Polish paper suggests the arrest of the archbishop for 41 an affront to national pride.” Ex-servicemen particularly are enraged.
