SOUTH DUNEDIN W.C.T.U.
The above branch met in Wesley Schoolroom on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Donaldson was welcomed back after a. short absence, and presided. Mrs Pelling conducted the devotional exercises, and spoke briefly and to the point on the right use of our talents. All members stood in silence, thus commemorating the life and influence of the late Mrs Gain—a veteran worker. The president gave reports of the National Council and of the last meeting of the district executive. It was resolved that Airs Donaldson continue as delegate to the N.C.W. Miss M'Cai’thy read the following: Do yon think that it is purely coincidence that while the increase in the consumption of beer has been 16J per cent, since the Budget, the increase of motor accidents on the roads has been 17 per cent,?—(Dr A. Salter, M.P.) The corresponding secretary was asked to write the Minister of Transport expressing the gratification of the branch at his proposals of greater stringency in protecting the community from the menace of the drunken motorist, the explicitness of the directions to pedestrians and motorists and for the assurance that vehicles carrying children will be subject to closer inspection in the future. It was agreed to take up a- collection for ‘ White Ribbon ’ in July.
