MODERN DEVELOPMENTS IN DOMESTIC SCIENCE TRAINING BY HUTU WHITAKER (Principal of the Gloucestershire Training College of Domestic Science). In his introduction to this book, Dr Thomas Loveday, M.A., L.L.D., Vicechancellor of Bristol University, says: “ The growing concern for public health has led us all to-day to recognise that a skill, in the domestic arts is an honourable acquirement, an integral part of preventive medicine, as well as a spring of happiness, but also that it needs to 'be wedded to science if not in every practitioner at least in those from whom practitioners learn.” In her book on'this subject. Miss Whitaker has set forth conclusions which are the result of wide experience and of study of the developments of her subject at home and abroad, not least in the United States of America, where much thought has been devoted to it.” The subject for the book was .suggested by a course of lectures to London County Council teachers given in 1935, and should prove of great interest to those engaged in teaching domestic science. Included in it arc chapters on the ideal lay-out of the kitchen in the home, in the hostel, and in tho college, on the needs of tho small rural school, on the need for special knowledge of diet in hospitals, and on varied aspects of domestic science training in the chapter on ‘Parallel Developments,’ Miss Whitaker says: “In tho dominions, _ especially Now Zealand, American ideas and methods have been adopted naturally enough, since that country was so far in advance of the Mother Country, and it was actually possible to obtain a degree in domestic science in New Zealand before one could bo obtained in England. One training college at least in England at one time found Now Zealand graduates tho most suitable to its needs, and for several years imported a succession of science lecturers from that country, until marriage-mor-tality eventually proved too high.” Tho book is adequately illustrated, and included are diet charts, suited for use in a college hostel. The publishers are Messrs J. M, Dent and Sons, Ltd., London.
