CITY SUBDIVISIONS

EXEMPTIONS 70 BY-LAWS DISCLOSURE OF OWNER'S NAME A request that applications for exemption from the by-laws in relation to the subdivision _ of city property should be accompanied by the owner’s name, in conjunction with that of the surveyor, was made by Or A. H. Allen at last night’s meeting of the City Council, when the Works Committee sought approval for three exemptions involving frontages of less than the prescribed 20ft. • Cr Allen said that the applications, recommended for approval by the committee, asked for frontages of 14ft to 16ft, instead of 20ft as prescribed by the by-laws. He could quite understand the reason for the granting of the applications in view of the many applications that had already been granted. It would be difficult for the committee to refuse such applications. If the committee really intended to continue granting exemptions they might as well make a new by-law. He considered that when applications for subdivisions were made the owner’s name should be joined with that of the surveyor of the property. The owner should let the public know when he was about to cut up his property. Submission of the owner’s name would also enable coucillors to visualise the property to be subdivided. The Mayor: A great number of applications for subdivisions are declined. Cr Allen: 1 know that. But if the owner’s name were attached to the application 'it would assist the council. Tn reply, Cr Munro (chairman) said that no application was granted unless refusal involved a big expense to the owner concerned. A large number of applications were declined. He did not know-whether the council had the right to insist on the owner’s name being attached to an application. Cr Silverstone; Why advertise the owners anyway? Cr Munro: There arc times when certain owners practically forbid any publicity on the matter.
