OPERATIC SOCIETY

WOf LOWEST AT HIS MAJESTY'S His Majesty’s Theatre was thronged last night, the largo crowd revelling in the simple ‘charm of ‘ Wildflowcr,’ ;-,is interpreted by the Oprratic Society. This Show Week attraction is tastejilly staged and admirably produced. When the piece made its debut on the London stage its most valuable asset (apart from the humorous episodes with which it is packed) was its songs, and they retain all their melo, dic beauty when sung by the principals of tho society. In this respect the society is fortunate in possessing as its leading actress such a fine singer as .Miss Freda Klines. Another seasoned vocalist is Mr Arthur Lungley, whose attainment of a high standard of acting is only equalled by his interpretation of the musical numbers. These leading players have an exacting task, and they complete it to the satisfaction of the audiences which have already enjoyed tho production. The. main comedy parts are faithfully delineated by Mr Richard (“ Spud ”) Murphy and Mr Stan. Lawson. Last night they practically stole the honours of the show, and were admirably supportd by Miss Sybil Thomson. Important characterisations in the work arc given by Miss Louise Henderson, Mr Roy Herbert, and Mr Roy M'Dougall. Tho ballet has always been a feature of performances of the society, andl this particular one enhances that reputation. The orchestra, controlled by Mr G. E. Wilkinson, is in general, a reliable ensemble. ‘ Wildflowcr ’ will be staged each night this week, and' a matinee performance will be given on Saturday. To-night’s programme will be honoured by tho presence of the Governor-General (Viscount Galway).
