“THE FORGOTTEN CITY OF SOUTH DUNEDIN.

JO THE EDITOR. Sir, —May I second the motion moved, as it were, by “ Safety First ” ? The danger from vehicular traffic at 'Cargill’s Corner cannot bo too strongly emphasised, and it- would* be no exaggeration to say that this crossing of two arterial roads compares with any other traffic-crammed locality in the city. The highest surges are, of course, at midday and 5 o’clock, and I think that at these times the presence of the white-gloved hand is certainly warranted. May I also echo the plaint of “ Safety First ” as to the loss of. memory by the powers that be anent things South Dunedin? The unthinking might easily believe we are a species of Corn Centre or Sleepy Hollow—just another spot for traffic to speed through. But certain observation shows a busy main, streot, tapping five or six large suburban areas, supporting three hotels, three banks, a post office, departmental, and chain stores, two taxi firms, a lull complement of professional men, a picture-theatre, and, of course all the numerous butchers, bakers,, and candlestick makers* A radius of-half a mile encompasses a surprising array of workshops, factories, mills, and insti tutions, all this proving that Cargill s Corner is no mean centre of a no mean district. A country township boasting of as much would be an extremely flourishing community indeed. Surely it would not be _ asking too much, as a start, to give us the pedestrian safety crossings. In conclusion, I wish to express a certain wonder that there is at long last one who is willing to rise above the inferiority complex tinder which South Dunedin labours, and make public our just dues and righteous needs. —I am, etc., Junius. June 10.
