[From Ouu Balclutha CouncspoNDEXT.l Juno 9. HOSPITAL BOARD. Mr A. Bennie presided over the monthly meeting of tho South Otago Hospital Board held yesterday. The medical superintendent (Dr D. G. Radcliffc) submitted the following statement of admissions and discharges for May. the figures for May last year being in parentheses:—Balclutha Hospital: Admissions 61 (62), discharges 62 (52), remaining 53 (50), X-ray examinations 23 (18), massage 51 (25). Milton : Admissions 13 (14), discharges 13 (12), remaining 7 (11). Owaka: Admissions 14 (14), discharges 14 (12), remaining 7 (Ilf Kaitangata: Admissions 9 (8), discharges 11 (8), remaining 1 (3), out patients 9 (9), —Received. The Treasurer reported that receipts for tho month totalled £2,807 16s Bd, and expenditure £1,425 2s sd. Maintenance payments to date were £4.668 12s Bd, capital expenditure £491 Is 10d. Debit balance at date £377 11s 4d, compared with £1,760 5s 7d on May 1 Received. . The Director-General of Health intimated that tho department had arranged for a specialist to visit public hospitals where no specialist was available to assist in the treatment of patients suffering from infantile paralysis. The expenses connected with the specialist’s visit would be borne by the department. In the case of Balclutha Hospital the specialist would be Mr Renfrew White, of Duneidn.—Approved. , Mr D. T. Fleming, Mayor of Balclutha, wrote stating that the GovernorGeneral would visit Balclutha after lunch on Friday next.—The chairman and as many members as possible are to attend. The chairman (Mr Rennie) was reappointed the board’s representative on the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee The Chairman reported having personally called on Mr S. Saltzman, Dunedin, and expressed tho thanks of the board to him for his generous donation of up to £3,000 towards the cost of a T.B. block at Balclutha Hospital, PLUNKET SOCIETY. The annual report of the. Balclutha branch of tho Rlunket Society states that during the year 3,128 visits were paid to the Plunket rooms in Balclutha, compared with 3,353 the previous year. Visits in the country totalled 957, compared with 704 the previous year. Visits to homes were 1,174 (1,016) in Balclutha and 851 (944) to out-stations, while 140 visits were paid to nursing homes. At Owaka 382 adults visited the rooms (346 last year), babies 316 (286), older children 47 (72). The balance sheet showed the credit balance to be £4l 19s sd, compared with £32 4s at the commencement of the year. Against this credit, however, were outstanding cheques totalling £24 15s 4d, bringing the credit balance down to £l7 4s Id. Subscriptions and donations were responsible for £l4B 11s Id. The Owaka branch showed a credit of £2O 12s sd, compared with £l2 3s 7*d at the start of the year. POULTRY CLUB. Mr S. Riach presided over a wellattended meeting of the Clutha Poultry Club last night. The secretary reported that entries for the show to be held on Juno 18 and 19 totalled 368, which was an increase on last year. In the popultry sections there were 34 entries in the open and 99 in the utility, while 59 bantams were entered. These figures showed a drop of about 35 in the poultry and 15 in the bantams. The drop was, however, more than compensated for in canaries, small birds, and pigeons, the entries being 108 in the. former and 55 in the latter. Satisfaction was expressed at the number of entries forward, and the opinion expressed that the show would be well up to the usual standard. The judges will be:—Poultry, Mr 11. Wilson, Invercargill; game, Mr J. A. Boswell, Dunedin j canaries and cage birds, Mr A. H. Smith, Gore; pigeons, Mr F. Robertson, Balclutha. The South Island championships to be competed for are Old English Game, Partridge or Wheaton-bantam, utility Ancona, and Old English Game cockerel colour). Stewards and other officials were appointed, and final arrangements made for the show. STIRLING DAIRY FACTORY. For the first time during the 51 years of its existence the Stirling dairy factory lias ceased the manufacture of cheese for about two months, and during that period will confine itself to the making ot butter. This step has been rendered necessary owing to the very unseasonable weather and shortage of feed having a detrimental effect on the milk supply. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. Tho monthly meeting of tho Balclutha Women's Institute held on Tuesday was very well attended, Mrs J. R. Copland presiding. The motto for the month was “ When you do a good turn don’t be like a lien and cackle,” while the roll-call was “ Earliest recollections of school days.” A collection was taken up in aid of the King George V. Memorial Fund. Mrs Landels, delegate to the South Otago Federation meeting, gave a very comprehensive report on the business transacted. The demonstrator for tho afternon was Mrs G. W. Guest, who gave a very interesting demonstration on brasswork. A good deal of general business was transacted. The points competitions resulted : —Pot raspberry jam—Mrs Sutherland 1. Mrs Montgomerie 2, Miss Laing 3. Verandah cushion—Mrs Sutherland 1.
