RUGBY REFEREES
WEARING OF BLAZERS A CANTERBURY COMPLAINT [Pee United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, June 9, Reasons for referees in Rugby games sometimes wearing clothing in addition to that provided in the regulations were given by Mr R. J. 6. Collins to the Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last night, A complaint had been made by Mr W-> A. Britten that a referee in a game on Saturday had worn a, coloured blazer over the regulation white jersey and shorts. A player would not be allowed to do it, said Mr'Britten, and referees should observe the regulations. A suggestion that referees wore blazers because they were not kept moving enough to keep them warm' drew, laughter. Mr Collins explained that blazers were permitted under the rules, and some referees wore them because they were subject to colds, and others because they had been awarded an All Black referee’s jersey, for refereeing in a test match. In spite of a protest from one member that the complaint was “ making a mountain out of a molehill ” a recommendation was finally carried that referees should wear the correct attire whenever possible.
