AGAINST ANZAC SPIRIT
AUSTRALIAN. MUTUAL EMBARGO [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 3. The suggestion that the returned soldiers’ organisations in New Zealand and Australia should take a hand in trying to bring about settlement of the dispute between the Dominion and the Commonwealth regarding potatoes and oranges was made by Mr W. E. Leadley, president of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association, at the annual reunion of the Australian and Imperial Forces Association on Saturday evening. “ Year by year this dispute drags on, and the people of both countries are suffering in consequence,” he said. To my mind, the time has arrived when the Anzacs in New Zealand and Australia should make a determined effort to end this dispute, and I suggest that t,he New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association conference and the conference of the Returned Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Imperial League of Australia should both pass resolutions strongly urging their respective Governments to settlei this dispute at the earliest possible moment, as it is not shared by the people, and is contrary to the spirit of Anzac.”
