Kaikorai’s Narrow Victory
School and Mosgiel Soccer Leaders The surprise of the day was the strong stand made by Zingari against Kaikorai in the senior HUgby games, a potted goal three minutes before time giving the hill team the win. This was reminiscent of Zingari of earlier days, known as the “ Diehards,” who often came out and made things difficult for leading sides. It was anticipated that Dunedin, an Improved team this year, would prove tough opposition for Varsity A, but the speed and better knowledge of the game by the students proved too much for their opponents, who were beaten by 22 to 3. Alhambra contested every inch of the way in the game against Pirates, but the latter side had more stamina, putting on most of their winning score of 20 to nil in the second half. Southern, unbeaten In the three games of the competition so far, had no trouble in defeating Varsity B by 46 to nil in a match in which the feature was the fine team work and understanding of the players of the winning side. At Mosgiel Taieri and Union played to a 6-all draw, the Taleri showing better form than in the early matches of the season. The third series of Soccer games was played on waterlogged and muddy fields and the displays suffered. High School Old Boys and Mosgiel are the only teams with three wins. Mosgiel’s forward line shaded Seacliff’s, but it lost a measure of its thrust through the careful attention paid to the centre forward, J. Skinner, whose goal average was not increased. School played Technical in a sea of mud and won through better combination. The matches won by Northern against Maori Hill and by RoslynWakari from Mornington provided poor Soccer.
