TREE PLANTING FOR THE CORONATION.

TO' THE EDITOR. Sir,— I Throughout’Great Britain, and in many parts of New Zealand, there is, in connection with the Coronation, to be much planting of trees. Here in Dunedin, except for some of the schools and a few other isolated instances, there would seem to be nothing of the sort. It may be too late now to embark on any large scheme, but could not our mayor plant at least one tree .on Coronation Day? And why should it not be planted on the enclosure in front of the railway station, where, so far, there are no-trees at'all? Perhaps it could be done after the Cathedral service in the morning. . Oaks take so long to grow, but if an oak should be thought suitable I have one about sft high, a very cherished possession, which was brought as a tiny seedling from Devonshire nearly 10 years ago, and I should be very glad to give it to the city. The planting of a tree or trees in the station square gives rise to the idea of further extension of trees up to our new square if and when it materialises. With Anzac Avenue, a beautiful enclosure in front of the station, the avenue eifect continued up to a fine square, the entrance to Dunedin would be unequalled in the Dominion. As to nomenclature—why Gloucester or Savage? Why not simply King George Square, after our late and much-loved King George Y. ?—I am, etc., Muriel A. C. Ross. May 3.
