GABLE CAR SMASH
ACCIDENT ON MORNINGTON LINE PASSENGERS CUT BY BROKEN GLASS FORTUNATELY NO SERIOUS INJURIES Win3ows were broken, but fortunately no one was seriously injured when a cable car coming down a steep grade on the High street line last evening crashed into the rear of a trailer behind another car in front. The accident occurred at about 7.25 p.m., when all cars coming from Mornmgtoh carried large complements of people visiting the city for the late shopping night. Both cars concerned in the crash were fully loaded. > The car with the trailer behind had occasion to stop on the flat near William street, which is at the foot of a fairly steep grade. The second car was then negotiating the grade, and was not pulled up in time to prevent its crashing into the rear of the vehicle in front.
The impact was followed by the breaking of glass on both cars, and the passengers naturally received a shock. One or two passengers were slightly cut with the glass, but no one was otherwise injured. The most serious case was that of a young lady who received a small cut on the forehead. Though the crash was bad enough to give a severe shaking to the passengers, it fortunately caused no structural damage to either of the cars. It was undoubtedly a lucky escape for the complements of about 100 passengers in the, cars. The tramways manager (Mr W. H. Mackenzie) stated this morning that an inquiry will be held into the cause of the. accident.
