WORK OF MOSGIEL BRANCH On June 3 of last year a meeting was held in Mosgiel- for th© purpose of forming first aid and home nursing classes. ‘Colonel Barclay, chief commissioner of th© St. John Ambulance Brigade,. arid Mr J. Ash, president of the association, gave very interesting facts and figures of work don© by qualified first aid workers. From June 10 meetings were held in the Fire Station Hall, with Dr Shaw as lecturer and Messrs Thompson and Lyon as instructors in practical work. • On August 19 the first aid examination was held, the 16 members sitting being successful. On September 2 a social evening was held. Mr Ash presided, and among those present were Mrs Ash, Mr Peters, Mr J. 0. White, district superintendent, and Colonel Morey, assistant commissioner. Successful candidates were presented with their first aid certificates by Mr Ash, who hoped that this would 1 be th© forerunner of St. John activities in th© Taieri district. Mr J. C. White stressed th© necessity of forming a division in Mosgiel, first to band together -willing workers, and, secondly, to gain further knowledge only acquired through team work. Colonel Morey advised successful candidates to carry on, form a nursing class, and ultimately bring into being a nursing division. Mr Peters, secretary of th© association, praised th© class members for their diligence, and expressed his complete satisfaction of the results. Mr J. White returned thanks on behalf of the class and took the opportunity to present Mr A. Thompson and Mr S. Lyon with small tokens of appreciation for the services so readily given. On September 9 a home nursing class was formed, with Sister Irving as lecturer and Miss Applegarth, lady corps superintendent, assisting with the practical work. On November 11 an examination was held, the 22 members sitting being successful. On November 25 a social evening, presided over by the mayor, Mr Quelch, was held. Among those present were Mr J. Ash and Mr Peters, representing the association, Mr J. C. White, representing th© brigade, Dr Monheimer, Sister Irving, and Miss Applegarth. Mr Quelch, as representative of the citizens of Mosgiel, congratulated those who, by reason of their course of lectures and success in th© examinations, had made themselves more worthy members of th© community. Mr J. Ash, when presenting th© home nursing certificates, th© members on behalf of th© association. Mr J. C. White gave an interesting account of deeds rendered by St. John home nurses, and of how nobly they gave their services when occasion demanded. Dr Monheimer then followed with an account of his travels, which was greatly appreciated. Mr Peters, secretary of the association, expressed thanks to the members for their response to his appeal to form classes in Mosgiel. The members then took th© opportunity of thanking Mr Peters for all arrangements made regarding doctors, lecturers, instructors, and examiners. During the evening small gifts of appreciation were handed to Sister Irving and Miss Applegarth by Mr Thompson o,n behalf of the members of th© nursing class.
