ANZAC DAY AND AWARDS

CLOTHING TRADE PENALISED DOUBLE PAY MONDAY [Pub United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, April 29. It has been ruled by the Labour Department that clothing manufacturers, who are subject to awards which provide that when Anzao Day falls on a Sunday the following Monday shall be observed as a holiday, and who kept their factories open on that day, must pay their employees double rates of pay under the awards. Failing such payment on .the first succeeding pay day, prosecutions will result. One employer who paid the ordinary rates of pay to-day, which was the usual pay-day in his factory, proposes to pay bis employees an extra day s wages to-morrow. So far the attitude of employers generally to the question has pot been determined, but it is anticipated that some 'employes at any rate will meet the department’s demand and pay the double rates for Monday on the weekly pay-day, which is to-morrow. There also seems reason to believe that the dispute which arose between .one firm and its employees, as reported yesterday, will be settled. [lnquiries locally indicate that there is no possibility of similar trouble arising in Dunedin. It was stated that clothing manufacturers were advised to observe the terms of the award, in spite of the provisions of the Act, and <Js a result they closed their factories on April 26.]
