SPORT OF RACING

SOUTH CANTERBURY J.C. SILVER SIGHT WINS THMM CUP SOUTHDOWN THE HURDLES Favoured with a bright and fine afternoon after heavy rain overnight, the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s Autumn Meeting on Saturday afternoon attracted one of the largest attendances seen on the Washdyke course for some years, and the big crowd, was treated to a . very interesting afternoon’s racing. The rain had not seriously affected the course, and good times..were recorded throughout the programme. After shaping badly at Waimate Silver Sight was one of the outsiders in the Timaru Cup, but put in a fine finishing run over the last two furlongs, and just beat another outsider in Mount Val by a narrow margin. The two favourites. Rebel Lad and Monipere, were both beaten a long way from home. Southdown, after making one bad" jump early in the race, won the hurdle race well, finishing very strongly to beat Silver Jest, who appeared to have the race in .hand at the last hurdle. Bill B. lost a good deal of ground in the early stages of - the mile and ahalf trot, and had to cover a lot of extra ground on the home turn. He was only beaten by a head, and made amends later in the afternoon by winning the mile ,and a-quarter race. Emissary put up a fine performance by carrying 9.13 in the Doncaster Handicap, and, leading all the way, beat Invoice, to whom he conceded 391 b, by a narrow margin. Speculation was brisk throughout the afternoon, £16,494 being handled, as compared with £9,515 last year, an increase of £6,979. •

Nightbound, Sunny Comet, and Poniard led over the first fence, which the first-named hit hard. Then Sunny Comet ran to the front Southdown lost ground by hitting the hurdle opposite the stand. After the next fence Nightbound, Sunward, and Sunny Comet were in charge, and at the far turn Nightbound and Sunward drew away and entered the straight four lengths clear of Silver Jest. The jast-nanied and Nightbound were joined by Southdown at the last fence, and in a good struggle between the Wingatui-trained pair Southdowii scored by a neck; Sunward eight lengths away third. Nightbound was next.

For the Electric Stakes Irish Fiddle (573-451), Salient Knight (334-379), and Vola Dale (241-257) carried heavy wagering. Astraea, Vola Dale, Salient Knight, and Almira were the first to show out from a good line, and after going a furlong the favourite joined Astraea. This pair lead Vola Dale and Salient Knight into the straight. At the distance Irish Fiddle had drawn clear and Vola Dale ran into second place, but the latter could make no impression on Irish Fiddle (a halfsister to Concertpitch), who won by two lengths; Salient Knight a similar distance away third, with Astraea and Almira next.

Bill B. (605-378), Laurene Wood (350-300),; Grattanclla (147-185), Jane Worthy (130-264), and Great Don (125238) were the best backed in the Gladstone -Trot. Bill B. was slow to)find his feet at the start, and Peggotty, Raywell, and Wyan failed to go away. Wagon Wheels led Baron Silk and Jane Worthy through the straight,. and at the end of five furlongs Wagon Wheels was just in front of Jane Worthy and Laurene Wood. Bill B. at this stage was eight lengths behind the leaders, but shortly afterwards began to move up. . At the far turn Wagon Wheels was just clear of Colonel Grattan and Laurene Wood. These three were followed into the straight by the favourite, who had to go wide out on the turn. Laurene Wood took charge at the distance, and just stalled off a good challenge from Bill B-. to beat him by a head. Great Don three lengths away third. Wagon Wheels and Colonel Grattan were next.

In the Timaru Cup Rebel Lad (629-4C-5), Mrnipere (604-493), Last Refrain (397-397), and Trivet (279-353) were the best backed. Trivet led through the, straight from Full Throttle, Rebel Lad, and Monipere. Passing the sevenfurlong post Trivet was just in front of Full Throttle, Monipere, and Last Refrain, but before the next furlong was completed Full Throttle took charge. Passing the five-furlong post Last Refrain ran to the front and drew out four lengths clear from Monipere, Trivet, and Rebel Lad. Last Refrain was first into the straight from Mount Val, Silver Sight, .and Rebel Lad. At the distance Last Refrain .was done with, and Mount Val and Silver Sight fought out a good finish, the latter winning by a short neck, Trivet three lengths away third, with Rebel Lad and Last Refrain next.

Cyrillian (975-403), Paper Note (631462), Silver Slipper (168-294), and Made Money (173-279) were the best backed for the Smithfield Hack Handicap. Cyrillian was the first to break a good line and was followed over the first furlong by Silver Slipper and Merry Del Val. Then the last-named ran to the front and was followed across the top by Paper Note, Silver Slipper, and the favourite. The last-named secured a good opening on the turn for home and at the distance was in charge. Over the final furlong Made Money made a good challenge, but failed by a length and a-half to reach Cyrillian. Pumak was a similar distance third, with Paper Note and Owlsgleam next.

Dictate (602 and 462), Recollection (396-394), Miracle (332-313), Superex (329-371), and Orange Bud (218-319) were the back backed for the Rosehill Hack Handicap. Trumpet Blast was slow to jump out, and Heloise led out from Miracle and Orange Bud, but at the end of two furlongs Dictate took charge from Miracle, Orange Bud, and Heloise, and at the far turn Dictate was jqined by Miracle, and this pair was two lengths clear of Orange Bud and Heloise. who were also racing together. This order was not changed racing round the far turn across the top and into the straight. At the distance Orange Bud threw out a good challenge, but it was short-lived, and Dictate beat Miracle by a short length, Orange Bud three lengths away third, with Recollection and Heloise next.

Bill 8., coupled with Royal Doulton (699-414), Jane Worthy (385-360), Pursuit (172-256), Taruna, coupled with Wynan H(166-248), and Laurene Wood, who was penalised 48yds (138-166) were the best backed for the Otipua Trot. Taruna, Grattanella, and Raywell failed to go away, and when the field settled down Locust was showing the way to Pursuit, King’s Jubilee, Wee Truman, and Bill B. As the field raced along the back Bill B. ran up into secand place, and at the far turn Locust was followed by Pursuit, Jane Worthy, and King’s Jubilee. Bill B. was just in front turning for home, and at the distance was stoutly challenged by Wynan, but, sticking to his task well, beat her by two lengths. Locust was five lengths away third, with Jane Worthy, Pursuit, and King’s Jubilee next. « * * • / For the Doncaster Handicap Fiord (558-338), Rebel Chief (411-327), Emissary (379-276), and Joyous (279276) were best backed.
