Impressive * Commemoration Services
Yesterday, the anniversary of the epic landing at Gallipoli, was a day of hallowed memories for New Zealand. Services were held throughoMt thejlength and breadth ; of the land in commemoration' of the 17,000 young N ew Zealanders who laid down their •live* Irt the Great War 0f'1914-1918—a nation’s gesture of sorrow at their passing, yet an expression of pride in their sacrifice and achievement. -Anzac Dayf being the anniversary of the day when the gallant band of New Zealanders, Australians,, and Imperial troops scaled of .G&Hpoli, it is;made a fitting occasion, for the commemoratron *of those*'who fell'ln ' all theatres during the whole period of the war., _ , ...... ... The day was fittingly observed in Dunedin, the main service being that held in the Town Hall under the auspices of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association, while many other services were held in schools and churches of the city and suburbs. Over 3,000 attended the service at the Town Hall, where a striking address was given by the Hon; W. Perry, M-L.C,, the Dominion president of the R.S.A. That the observance of the day has yet lost none of its significance to a very large section of the community was clear from the surprisingly large attendances,: despite the unfavourable weather,_ at all the services. Nature herself yesterday seemed to be in keeping with the spirit of mourning, for, from a leaden sky, rain fell for most of the day. The...following message was' received by the Governor-General (Viscount Gal Way) from His Majesty the King in connection with the observance bf AriracDay:— , The thoughts of the Queen and myself are with my people • iri New Zealand in their observance of this day of glorious memory, George R.I. The Governor-General has sent the . following reply to His Majesty’s message:— Your Majesty’s subjects in this Dominion most deeply appreciate the gracious message from your Majesty and the Queen in the observance of this day of sacred-memory. The thoughts of all turn with loyalty and affection to the Throne. Galway.
