MUNICIPAL HOUSING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —On studying the plans of the houses to be erected in the city I noticed that the man with a large family is left out, as usual, in spite of the fact that there is an outcry from the powers that be that the birth rate is falling and we are facing racial suicide. It is not the question of having the family that worries most people, but the question of accommodating them in such a manner that they grow up in an environment that will assist in making them useful mens hers of the community. Take a family of two,, for instance, a boy and a girl. 1 suppose in the new houses it will be a case of turning the sitting room into a bedroom, thereby denying the children and the parents the convenience of a sitting room. The houses are big enough to alter the layout a little and supply the necessary extra room. It is very evident that, although larger families are better for the community in general, no provision is likely to be made to accommodate them. Also, it has been mentioned that after the arrival of a child provision should be made for the mother to have help for a few weeks. In the event of employing such help, I suppose it would be quite in order to expect her to sleep in the bathroom. 1 submit that the houses are not in keeping with the requirements of those who need them most, the men with families, nor do they encourage an increase in the family.—l am, etc., Family.
