POPPY DAY

COLLECTION ON FRIDAY LIBERAL RESPONSE ANTICIPATED Scarlet poppies, the emblems of remembrance of those wlm were killed or injured in tho Great ar, will bo on sale on the city streets on Friday of this week, when the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association will conduct its annual Poppy Day collection. Ladies will offer poppies for sale in tho main streets from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and there will be a house-to-house canvas in the suburbs during the morning. The poppies, which have been made by disabled men in New Zealand, will be sold at, one shilling for the small size and two shillings for the large size, and badges will be offered for sale in the schools for anv sum less than one shilling. As usual, the association has the assistance of a large band of enthusiastic lady helpers, which will include two yount* ladies, who will assist from 7 o’clock till 8.15, before commencing their daily job in the city. Crosses of remembrance will be on sale this year for the first time, these taking tile form of a small wooden cross with a poppy affixed. Two additional stands, one at Dawson’s Corner and tho other at the A.M.P. Corner, will be provided on this occasion for the sale of the crosses, which, however, mav be purchased at any of tho other stalls. Special sand boxes will bo provided at the foot of the fallen soldiers’ memorial in the Queen’s Gardens for those who wish to place their crosses there any time from Saturday morning onwards.

There has been a heavy demand for poppies throughout the province,, and a total of 56,000, which is 5,000 more than last year, will bo on sale. The association is confident that the public of Otago will respond as liberally as. has been the case in former • years. The following donations have been received towards the Poppy Day fund: — W. M. Wade, Sutton, £1 7s tid; Otago Master Grocers, £1 Is; Woolworths (N.Z.) Limited, £5 ss.
