IMPERIAL EX-SERVICEMEN
The second social of the season was held in the E.S.A. Social Hall last ■week. Owing to the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr L. G. Lilly), who was out of town, the association’s padre, Rev. Albert Mead, M.A., presided over a very large attendance of members and their friends. The evening’s entertainment took the form of a talk and the showing of films by Colonel A. S. Bruce Smith (Commanding Officer of the Otago Mounted Rifles). This was highly interesting, as Colonel Smith has usfc recently returned from an extended trip to the Homeland, and at the same time had visited both France and Belgium. His verbal description 6f the Towns that had been in the war zone, as they were and how they look to-day, gave all food for thought, especially when some excellent film shots depicting these places enabled those of : hit audience who remembered them under war-time conditions to see and realise the tremendous difference now. Colonel Bruce Smith was also present at the unveiling by ex-King Edward of the Canadian War Memorial, and filmed scenes in connection with same, whilst views of various memorials, in particular Menin Gate, and war cemeteries were most impressive. Before concluding Colonel Smith showed some excellent films depicting the'presentation of Colours to the Guards, Regiments bv ex-King Edward in Hyde Park, and finished with a very humorous film. . Supper was then served, and the chairman, in moving a hearty vote of thanks to Colonel Smith, voiced the appreciation of all at the kindness he had shown in coming along and giving such a splendid night’s entertainment, Vis 1 snig carried by acclamation most heartily.
