MONTHLY BOARD MEETING The monthly meeting of the Education Board, commenced to-day, was attended by Messrs D. T. Fleming (in the chair), C. E. Richards, N. Colquhoun, E W. Morgan. W. D. Sutherland, D. , Marshall, and W. M. Cooper. SCHOOL RESIDENCES. The Head Master at Kaikorai School made application tor improvements at the residence in order to make it more convenient and up to date. The architect reported that the kitchen, scullery, and bathroom arrangements were somewhat inconvenient and out of date, and a complete remodelling of this part or the house was desirable. To alter the kitchen to a dining room and fit up a kitchenette, including an electric range costing £3O, would come to a total of £129 10s; to form a small bedroom into a bathroom, £3O 10s; to fit wardrobes in two front bedrooms, £8; to paper walls of sitting room and middle room, £7. Total, £175. . , , The Secretary said that some residences were now so much out of date that anything done to them was new work rather than remodelling. It was decided, after discussion, to ask the department for permission to sell the old building for removal, and to retain the land. It was also decided to bring under the notice of the department the whole question,of the renewing of old residences. GRANT APPROVED. The Education Department intimated that a grant had been made for an additional class room at Waipiata. The architect reported that plans and. specifications for tendering were almost completed.—Noted, the architect to proceed with the work. CONVEYANCE OF PUPILS. The Education Department intimated that an increased grant had been made to cover the cost of conveying the Wavverley children from the Anderson’s Bay School in the afternoon, as well as to school in the morning.—The Secretary reported that the City Corporation had agreed to the terms, and that the completed service would be commenced this week. INCREASED ACCOMMODATION SOUGHT. The Alexandra District High School made application for two class rooms for the secondary departments place of a detached woodwork room.—lt was decided to forward an application to the Education Department. The Education Department drew attention to a report received from the senior inspector about additional accommodation for manual training at the Owaka District High School. One room was being used as a combined class room, cookery room, and science room.—The architect recommended that a cookery room be added to the application for a woodwork room at present before the department.—Approved. ELECTRIC POWER. The Otago Electric Power * Board wrote with respect to the supply Ot power for Maniototo and Strath Taieri. It was stated that the board was canvassing parts of those districts with a view to supplying power, ihe cost of an installation at the Ranfurty teachers residence would be about hU 17s 6d, and at Waipiata £l6 Ss. The Education Department would find twothirds of the cost in each case.—Approved. MISCELLANEOUS APPLICATIONS. The Oamaru North Committee asked whether the board would pay halt-cost of laying linoleum in the passage the architect estimating the total cost at about £3o.—Consideration was deferred till the next meeting. ~ , The Ardgowan Committee applied for assistance in erecting a cycle shed for 25 bicycles. r J ho ar^“ I^ec^ . 6stl * mated the cost at about £2o.—lt was decided to grant half the cost * . It was reported that a suitable piano could be obtained for the Sara Cohen Memorial School for £3O, which v.aa £5 more than the contribution from the Nuffield fund.—lt was decided to gr The Alexandra District High School Committee applied for the installation of an automatic stoker to the hot-air imatiim plant. The estimated cost was £IOO, "and the committee. agreed to | find one-third. —It was decided to ask the Education Department tor onethird of the cost. . , The Tokomamro District High School Committee applied for renovating work in the technical buildings. The architect reported*that repairs to the cement piaster in the interior were necessary at a cost of £lO. Interior renovation would cost £53. but it could not be carried out until the walls were dry after the plastering.—lt was decided to grant the £lO, and to hold over consideration of the other matter. The Anderson’s Bay School Committee applied for a wooden floor on the infant shelter shed in place of the present asphalt floor. The architect' recommended that the work be carried out, at a cost of £2s.—Approved,
