MR HARGEST’S STATEMENTS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As one who has left not a single pebble unturned to place the Labour Government in office, I deeply deplore the blessed dust the gallant Mr Hargest is endeavouring to suck into the wind up north. Mr Hargest is one of a few disgruntled Tories who made shipwreck of their many opportunities until the people, whose voice is supreme and absolute, said in effect: “We had quite enough of you and your Tory associates.” The people are aware of the result. We hear now periodically from the charming north the sorry cries of a lone star and disappointed ranger, who appears to be beating the air with a flail in his efforts to raise the wind against the Government of the land, who were placed in office bv an overwhelming majority of the good people of New Zealand. Now a great number of us believe that Mr Hargest is capable of better things if ho would 1 only reflect over the deplorable history of his party. Ihe people want facts and not a biased.
party statement, which always falls to the ground for lack of proof. The people as a rule are far too wise to accept extravagant statements for useful facts. My happy pilgrimage at present is among the farming community, and quite a number of these gentlemen requested me to write this humble epistle and state therein that the farmers are quite satisfied with the present Government, and that the sheep farmers, who received a good price for their wool, have no cause to complain. A statesman must be fair, discarding bias, which, if he _is foolish enough to use, recoils on himself. Alas, is this not a clear case of one seeing the mote in the other fellow’s eye, instead of pulling the beam out of his own optic, even at the risk of losing the sight of both eyes? That is what they call windsucking ’politics in the U.S.A. —I am, etc., Axe us Cameron* Robertson*, 46 Dundonakl street, Anderson’s Bay. April 16.
