MORE FLATS PROPOSED

BLOCK OF FOURTEEN IN TENNYSON STREET Reproduced on this page is a sketch, plan of the elevation of a block of 14 flats'which it ;s proposed to erect on a half-acre site in Tennyson street at an estimated. total cost of £19,000, including the. price paid for the land. The scheme has been promoted by Mr R. Nichol, and sufficient share capital has been subscribed to allow the company—Tennyson Court Ltd,—to go to allotment immediately, while the balance of the capital required is expected to be obtained- within a few days and a start made with the erection of the building at the end of the present foonth. Accoinmodation in the block is proposed ;to be much on the same lines .as in the St. George Court block in George street, provision being made for improvements in certain details. The flats are to vary in size and are to contain two or three bedrooms and one or two living-rooms. A rear entrance is to be provided to each flat to eliminate tie necessity of tradesmen having to come to the front entrance. The proposed building is two' stories in height, nine'garages being provided at the rear beneath the clothes-drying areas. Four sets of laundry equipment are being provided, while projecting sun balconies are to most if the upper flats. Quite a modem style of textured plaster has been chosen for the exterior finish of the building, which is to be surrounded by gardens laid out in an ’attractive manner with driveways and shrubberies. At the present time one old wooden house—about to be demolished—stands oh the site, which is considered to be one of the best for flat purposes in Dunedin. Not only does it command an excellent view—from St, Clair to Northeast Valley—but it is situated only 134yds from Princes street,, above the Dowling street steps and adjacent to the Otago Girls’ High School. Private tenders have been received for the erection of the building, which is to cost over £14,000, including the fees of the architect (Mr Ijl, M'Dowell Smith). Messrs R. Mitchell and Sons have recorded the lowest contract price.
