According to a statement made today by the deputy-chairman of tho Wheat Committee (Mr L. J. Schmitt), milling wheat is to bo released for sale as fowl feed. It was also announced that Australian wheat has been purchased to relieve "the position. The fowl wheat position has recently become acute, as millers have been taking almost all the wheat offering, and tho supplies of fowl feed have been insufficient to meet the local demand. Mr Schmitt’s statement is as follows:—“In order to provide poultry keepers with supplies of New Zealand wheat, the Wheat Committee has found it necessary to release a certain quantity of milling wheat to meet the demand for fowl feed. Wheat is being sold at 5s 3d, the March basis, plus increments and brokerage charges. The Wheat Committee has also purchased some Australian wheat for feeding, and it is hoped that this will relieve the demand for New Zealand milling wheat for poultry. By an arrangement made with tho merchants this wheat will be sold to poultry keepers in the North Island in 10-sack lots, ex wharf, at a small profit (3d per bushel) over the ex wharf, landed cost. This applies also to Australian wheat, the landed cost of which will, of course, he higher than that of New Zealand wheat.”.
