WAITAKI DOG TRIALS

AWAMOA TENNIS CLUB After one, of the worst seasons on record the tennis season was officially closed on Saturday at the Awamoa Club, when members and a large contingent of players from the various affiliated clubs in North Otago spent an enjoyable afternoon on the courts. The afternoon was devoted to the completion of the club’s championships and mixed doubles play. The final of the men’s singles championship was a maratjaon affair, lasting nearly two hours. The ebrttestants were J; Walton and C. J. L. Mollison, the former winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Miss R. Donaldson had little trouble in defeating Mrs Bradley in straight sets, the scores being 6-3, 6-1. This match constituted the final of the ladies’ singles championship, Mrs Bradley being unable to cope with her opponent’s drives to the corners. After an interesting match the Nichols Cup, presented by Mr R. B. Nichols, for a mixed doubles handicap competition, went to J. Fanjilton and Miss R. Donaldson, who defeated Mollison and Mrs Mollison to the tune of 50-39. . : The presentation of the trophies was made by Mrs J. H. Main. BOWLING A successful rinks tournament was held on the Phoenix old green on Saturday afternoon under fine weather conditions, and with the green in splendid order. The fifty-second annual trials held at Hakataramea by the Waitaki Collie Dog Club were very popular with both the competitors and the spectators, the organisation, under the leadership of Messrs W. Menzies (chairman), W. B. Maclay, and D. W. Gillies (secretaries), leaving nothing to be desired. Mr J. M‘Rae (Waimate) was the judge. The open events resulted as follow: Short Pull and Yard.—l. In the juniors, Rovers defeated Oamaru by 4 goals to 1, Thorpe and Watson each scoring two goals for Rovers and Goodall a goal fop iamaru. Mr G. Thorpe was the umpire; St. Patrick’s A defeated St. Patrick’s B, scoring 4 goals in the first half and 8 in the second. . Ihe scorers were: Connors (4), Sinclair (4), Arscott (2), Ross and M'Elhenny. Mr R. A. Moore controlled the game. In the third grade Oamaru defeated Rovers by 3 goals to 1. G. Minty, M'Caffery, and Christie scored for Oamaru,- and A. Minty for Rovers. Mr T. W. Jacobs was ihe umpire. WESLEY LADIES' GUILD Mrs Jack (president) presided at the monthly meeting of the Wesley Ladies’. Guild. After devotional exercises the meeting took the form of a bring and buy sale, when good business was done and ihe funds of the guild were increased considerably. The hall was arranged by Mrs Bridgman, to whom a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded. The president reminded members that the next meeting would be the annual meeting and asked - all members to endeavour to be present. During the afternoon a short musical programme was , presented by Miss Chase (pianoforte solos) and Miss Tweed (songs). Afternoon tea was served by the Social Committee. SCHOOL SPORTS Mr B. R. Lynskey presided at a meeting of the Waitaki School Sports Association held at Duntroon, at which the report of the school sports field at Duntroon showed that they had been a great success. Through the generosity of the school committees and friends it had been possible to secure a championship cup, and the executive was very grateful to the teachers, committeemen, and officials from Oamaru and Dunedin, who had worked so willingly _ to make the inaugural sports meeting an undoubted success. The balance sheet showed the association to be in a sound financial position. , Owing to the epidemic it was decided to postpone the spprts gathering and to hold a meeting in August to prepare for a sports gathering in September. Kindly references were made by other representatives to the work of Messrs B. R. Lynskey (superintendent) and R. S. Harrison (secretary)^' both having sponsored the proposal to form the association. In returning thanks they expressed great pleasure at the enthusiasm ■ shown ■ by the schools, in carrying on the annual sports. The schools concerned are Kurow, Haka,; Haka Valley, Otiake, Otekaike, Duntroon, Maerewhenua,’ Livingstone, Tokarahi, Tslapd Cliff, Ngapara, and Awamoko. Mr A. Gardiner (Island Cliff') is now president and Mr J. Don (Otekaike) secretary. GOLF. The best cards returned for the bogey match last week were:—Mrs Meek 4 down, Miss M‘Lay 4 down. Maheno beat Palmerston 3-0, and Kurow accounted! for Excelsior 16-10. —Athletic v. Ngapara.— Athletic journeyed to Ngapara to play this match and' opened the scoring from passing rushes with a good try by Perkins. Even play followed until half-time, when’T. Dwyer was injured in going for a touch-down. Hamniil scored under the posts for Howell to convert, and just on time D. Watson scored for Ngapara and added the

extra points. Dwyer was admitted! to the Oamaru Hospital suffering from an injured elbow, but inquiry yesterday showed that his condition was very satisfactory. —Maheno, v. Palmerston.— Maheno played Palmerston • at Palmerston. Maheno won just on the call of time with a try by Price, which was not converted. —Excelsior v. Kurow. — With two Excelsior players in the team to fill vacancies, Kurow defeated Excelsior’by 6 points. Davey (2) and Godsell scored tries for Kurow, and a Kurow player' also scored a try,; two being converted 1 .
