PRIEST’S IMPRESSIONS

DOMINION’S SOCIAL EFFORTS WATCHED AFAR BRITAIN’S GOOD MOTIVES SUSPECT REGARDED AS "SUCCESSFUL RETIRED BURGLAR " [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, April 19. “ The eyes of the world are on New Zealand. Many people are hoping that a solution, of many social problems will be found in the efforts being niade by the Government,” said the Rev. Dr T. L. Buxton, administrator of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, who returned by the Aorangi after extensive travels in Europe. He said that if New Zealand was able to bring about a better distribution of wealth without resort to class_ war it Would give a most valuable lead in world reorganisation. “ The people living in this part of the world should be grateful. Travelling with me on the Orford to Australia were people representing fifteen nationalities, including a number of families driven from Germany,, who had made a home in Spain, only to see revolution send them off again in search of peace,” People had not lost faith in the League of Nations. British rearmament was regarded as the best pledge for peace, but, nevertheless, we must try to appreciate the viewpoint of the Continent. “ People on the Continent view Britain as a very successful retired burglar who has made a dedication to reform, and has called upon fellow professionals to reform with him on the basis that each keeps what he holds. “Until we are able to convince the world that we really have common interests mueh at heart, our lead in the League of Nations will he suspected.”
