MOTORIST CHARGED

ALLEGATION OF INTOXICATION ADJOURNED FOR MEDICAL EVIDENCE Ernest Adam Gunn, for whom Mr P. S. Anderson appeared, was charged before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday with being intoxicated in charge of a motor car. Senior-sergeant Packer said that shortly after 10 o’clock on Saturday evening the defendant was noticed getting out of his car in Moray Place by Constable Craig, whose attention was drawn to him owing to his unsteadiness on his feet. The constable accosted the defendant and found he was intoxicated. He made some rambling statements that bo was not the owner of the car, and was taken to the police station, where Dr Harty examined him and certified that he was not in a fit state to be in charge of a car. . . Constable Craig stated in evidence that the defendant told him the car was not his, and he was waiting for a friend who was going to drive him to South Dunedin. Later he admitted that he was the owner of the car, but asserted that he did not hare the ignition keys with him. Witness noticed a key hanging by a length of string from the defendant’s trouser pocket, Gunn denied that was his key. and suggested that witness was endeavouring “ to put one across him.” To Mr Anderson; Witness was certain that Gunn did not tell him that he was going for his keys so that the car could be removed to a nearbv service station. Constable M'Dougall said he saw the defendant when he was brought to the watch-house. He was very antagonistic towards Constable Craig, and denied knowledge of the whereabouts of keys of tbe car. To Mr Anderson: It appeared to witness from the defendant’s demeanour that he had some grudge against Constable Craig. The defendant did not at anv time sav in the watch-house that 'he had left the keys in the car. He denied all knowledge of them. Senior-sergeant Packer asked for an adjournment in order that Dr Harty’s evidence might be heard. The magistrate adiourned the case until Thursday. Bail was allowed in the sum of £25. a rendition being that the defendant in the meantime should not drive a car.
