MR LEWIN’S RETIREMENT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As mayor for four years and City Councillor for years, might I suggest to Mr G. A. Herring that his letter shows a lack of good taste, also tremendous ignorance and petty spite? Mr Lewin was appointed to the position of town clerk many years ago, and is acknowledged by every class as being outstanding at his work. If those in close touch with him gladly acknowledge his worth, surely that should convince Mr Herring that they knew. The “ sworn enemy ” piffle is childish. Sworn to whom? Then, “ the Government has also honoured a foe ” is also rather humorous. If Mr Herring will grasp the fact that a town clerk is appointed not to represent any political party, but the council and citizens, he will then be able to criticise intelligently and say whether Dunedin has or has not been fortunate in having such a splendid man as Mr George Lewin as its town clerk for such a lengthy period.—l am, etc., R. S. Black. April 12.
