OBITUARY

MR J. H. FRASER The death occurred at his residence, Shetland street, Kaikorai, on Sunday morning of Mr Janies Nicol Fraser, who was well known as a traveller in the soft goods trade in Dunedin and Otago for over 26 years. Born in Edinburgh, Mr Fraser was prior to coming’ to New Zealand engaged in the wholesale drapery warehouse of Messrs Stewart and M'Donald, Argyle street, Glasgow, ■ for many years. Arriving in Dunedin in 1911, Mr Fraser was appointed traveller by Messrs Sargood, Son, and Ewen, with which firm he served with success for 22 years, and at the time of his death was town traveller for Messrs Arthur Ellis and Co. Mr Fraser was keenly interested in horticulture and his garden, reflected his taste in that direction. In Scottish affairs Mr Fraser found an outlet for much enthusiasm, and filled the position of president of the Scottish Society of Dunedin. He was married in Dunedin in 1914, and is survived by his widow.

[Algernon Bennett Langton Ashton, composer, was professor of the pianoforte at the Royal College of Music, 1885-1910; London College of Music, 1913-35; on the Board of Examiners, 1918-33. He was born in Durham in 1859. Ho studied at Leipzig and Frankfort under famous teachers. He published about 170 works, amongst them being 18 sonatas for various instruments, three trios, two quartets, two quintets, a suite for two pianofortes, several other pianoforte duets, 248 single pianoforte pieces, and 220 songs. He was a man of wide interests and a frequent contributor to the Press.]

Paine, author and editor, was born in 1861. He was the literary executor of Mark Twain and wrote a long list of books and contributed verse and prose to several magazines.]
