THE ANNUAL DISTRICT MEETING CM. ALPINE ELECTED GRAND MASTER Ushering in the ninetieth year of its existence, the annual meeting of the Otago District 1 Committee of the M. was held in the lodge room of the. Loyal Albion Lodge, M.U. Chambers, on Saturday. The provincial grand master. (Bro. E. J. W. Hey) presided over one of the largest attendances ever recorded. The following district officers were associated with him: Prov. Welcomes were extended to P.P.G.M. J. _ Wilson and Pro-deputy P.G.M. R. Price, from Southland. Letters were received extending fraternal greetings and best wishes from the district secretary, A.0.P., and the district secretary, Auckland division, M.U.1.0.0.F. REMITS. A remit that it be a recommendation to the district meeting to dispense with the Juvenile Council and that the district officers act as the governing body, on the grounds that the expenses involved were not justified, was considered. It was further pointed out that the senior lodges and the ladies’ lodges came under the jurisdiction of the district officers, and m consequence it seemed only right the juvenile lodges should also. Upon Bro. Sligo pointing out that the district officers would not have the time to give juvenile matters the attention they demanded, the motion was lost. A remit that rule 40, paragraph 9, be amended by the addition of the words “ for each individual candidate,” was carried. The paragraph then read as follows:—If more than one candidate is to be balloted for on the same evening, the candidates mav be balloted for at the one time, If the ballot should not be favourable, a ballot must then bo taken for each individual candidate.” A further remit that rule 29, paragraph 14, be amended to read, in effect, that where the finances of a lodge were not such that the expenses of a deputy to the district meeting could lie paid, the district executive should he empowered to pay those expenses from the district management fund, was also carried. Sligo made special reference to the passing of their highly-esteemed brother, P.G.M. Lingstrom. He had rendered particularly loyal and unselfish service to the order, and his loss was felt most severely by all. The sum of £SO was voted the Juvenile Council for administration. It was moved that the usual number of reports be printed and distributed. It was decided to fix the levy for the district benefit fund at 3s per half-year for each member. It was moved that the auditor and the tyler be paid It was decided to present the sum of £25 to the King George y. Children’s Memorial Camp. SMOKE CONCERT On Saturday evening visiting delegates were the guests of the Albion Lodge at a smoke, social in the Lodge Hall, Stuart street. N.G. Bro. K. Thomson presided, and extended a welcome to the visitors and local brethren. Special reference was made to the presence of P.P.G.M. Bro. W. Sullivan, now of Wellington, and P.G. Bro. J. Carrington, the oldest member of Loval Albion Lodge. District officers present were: P.G.M. Bro, H. Alpine, P D G M. Bro. W. R. Sellar, Prov. Sec. Bro. J. A. Hopcraft. Prov. Treasurer Bro. A. Sligo, and P.P.G.M. Bro. E. J. W. Hey. After the loyal toast had been honoured the toast of “ The District Officers ” was proposed by P.P.G.M. Bro. O. L. Calvert, the P.G.M. and district officers responding. The toast of “ The New P.G.M. ” was proposed by P.P.G.M. Bro. P. W. Stabb, who said that Bro. Alpine took office with a record of good service in the Albion Lodge, which set a high standard, and he was assured of the full support and co-operation of that lodge. In reply, the P.G.M. stated that he regarded his elevation to office as an honour to the Albion Lodge, to which he owed much for his education and experience in Oddfellowship. A tribute was paid to the retiring member of the district by P.G. Bro. L. E. Anderson, who said that all appreciated Bro. Cameron’s excellent service. The retiring P.P.G.M. had been a very popular district officer. _ Bro. Cameron replied, and said that his term of office had been a pleasant one, made easy by the ready assistance and co-operation of the district officers and lay members.

P.P.G.M. Bro. E. Longworth, proposing the toast of “ The Southland District.” said that during the past few years there had been an interchange of visits between the two districts. These had been inaugurated by the late provincial secretary of the Southland district (Bro. Edmonds), and he hoped the visits would continue. The toast was acknowledged by P.D.G.M. Bro. Price and P.P.G.M. Bro. Wilson, of Invercargillj who thanked the Otago District for its hospitality, and extended fraternal greetings from Southland. The toast of “ The Visitors and Entertainers ” was proposed by P.P.G.M. Bro. Penny, Bro. Himburg responding on behalf of the entertainers, while P.P.G.M. Bro. C. Wood (Dalton), P.P.G.M. Bro. A. Wylie (southern lodges), P. Secretary W. Couper (northern lodges), P.P.G.M. Bro. A. L. Hart (Central), and P. Secretary Bro. J. List (city) responded for the visiting lodges. An enjoyable programme was supplied by Begg’s Orchestra, under the leadership of Bro. Himburg, and items were given by Bro. C. H. Russell (recitations), Mr F. White (character songs), and Mr Bolton (cornet solos). Before the function was closed, reference was made to the hospitable manner in which delegates to the district meeting and functions had been entertained, the efforts of the lodge Social Committee, led by Per. Secretary Bro. A. G. Monk, and Bro. C. James, being very much appreciated.
