Aubrey Haddocks, the formar Road .Transport Commissioner, was '"convicted-,'and sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment. In a dramatic statement from the dock, Maddocks said that some time ago his official duties became so wearying that he had felt he was bordering on a complete breakdown. He tried drinking heavily without getting relief. A youth whom he had been trying to help had quietly planned his. destruction. He denied any association between the youth and himself. The youth, in evidence, admitted having = been deported from New Zealand.
