BATTLE PRACTICE

H Z. WARSHIPS IN HAURAKI GULF [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, April 9. The Australia destroyer Waterhen, commanded by Lieutenant-commander Spurgeon, arrived from Wellington this afternoon. The remainder of the squadron comprising the .Canberra, Australia, Sydney, Swan, Stuart, and Vendetta, will arrive at Auckland next Friday, and will remain in port until April 21. The ships of the New Zealand Division are at present carrying out exercises in Hauraki Gulf. The sloop Wellington came into port this morning and left later with a large battle practice target in tow. Night exercises were carried out to-night by the Achilles, and star-shells were fired from her high-angle guns. The Achilles will return to port for the week-end, and will leave for the gulf again on Monday. She will carry out another night shoot on Monday evening, and full calibre shoots with her 6in guns on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. In company with the Wellington and the Leith, the flagship will return to port finally next Thursday to prepare for the arrival of the Australian squadron.
