SCHOOLS’ SWIMMING

CHAMPIONSHIP CARNIVAL CONCLUDED BEGG GUP TO DUNEDIN NORTH GOOD TIMES REGISTERED The Otago State primary schools’ swimming championships were concluded before a very large crowd of spectators at the Municipal Baths last night, and the .expectations of spirited racing, “and close, 1 finishes held out after the first night’s programme were more than fulfilled) in the finals, which produced very good swimming in most cases, while one record was broken

andi another equalled. As anticipated, the competition for the Begg Cup, awarded to the _ school gaining most points in championship events, was a close one, and although Dunedin North Intermediate succeeded in retaining possession of the coveted trophy, its superiority was not so marked as in previous years. It gained 1 26 points, while Arthur Street was runner-up with 20J points, Macandrew Hoad being third with 14 points. A gratifying feature was the way the points were spread over many schools. Normal, High Street,. North-east Valley, Kaikorai, Musselburgh, and_ St. Clair all performed well, and, as indicating the development of interest in the meeting, it is noteworthy that no fewer than 13 schools collected points. Honours were fairly evenly distributed t in the four relay events, but Dunedin North Intermediate showed superiority in- the senior division, winning both the boys’ and girls’ races. North-east Valley gained a second and a third in the senior relays, while the mixed relay was won by Arthur Street, with Musselburgh in second .place. The boys’ junior relay under 12 was won bv Normal, Macandrew Road winning the girls’ event in the same division.

Outstanding form was again shown by the highly-promising Macandrew Road swimmer, Noeline Peat, .who accomplished the possible by winning the 25yds girls’ free style championship under 12 in the good time of 19sec, taking first place' in the 25yds girls’ breast stroke championship under 14 • in 21sec, this being the second occasion during the carnival that she equalled the existing mark put up by Miss Olive Buckland in 1932, _ and also being a member of the Winning Macandrew Road team in the junior girls’ relay. The final of the girls’ breast stroke was an exciting race, and Annette Armour put up a great swim for second place. N. Marslin, a Normal School representative, put up a similar performance to that of Miss Peat, for in the boys’ section this versatile youngster set a new record in the 25yds breast stroke championship of 21seo (fourfifths of a second faster than the mark set by R. Peat last year). In a very keen race D. Warwick (Arthur Street) swam second, and showed much promise, G. Plaister (Arthur Street) being third. Marslin showed equal facility on the free style, and won the 25yds championship, boys under 11, in the fast time of 17 2-ssec. In this race he had an exciting tussle with a schoolmate, L. Williams, who also went a fast race. For a 10-year-old boy Marslin’s swimming was most noteworthy, and he was. also a member of Normal’s winning team in the boys’ junior relay. Jack Houston (Arthur Street) was the only competitor to score a double in free style events, this strong young swimmer capturing the 33 l-3yds boys’ titles for the under 13 and 14 classes, his times respectively being 23 l-osec and 23 sec. Good finishes were staged in both races, W. Williams (Norma!) being second in the under 14 class and L. Roberts (Musselburgh) in the under 13 event. A. Young (Arthur Street) took third place in each event. In the 25yds hoys under 12, Ron Dlanchett (Dunedin North Intermediate) showed good style in winning in the fast time of 16 4-ssec, while the 50yds boys’ breast stroke championship, under 14, brought some very good exponents to light. R. Peat (Macandrew Road) carried off this event and returned 43sec for the distance, only 2 2-ssec slower than Roy Geddes’s re-

cord—very good time for a 12-year-old boy. H, Newall (St. Clair) s who collected second place, showed himself to he one of the most promising breast stroke swimmers at the meeting. J. Hay (Kensington) won the 66 2-3yds boys’ free style championship, under 14, in 58 2-sscc from J. Sheddan (Dunedin _ North Intermediate), and Jim Purdie (Arthur Street), who was third in this event, gave a very neat display to win the boys’ diving championship, in which R, Baker (North-east Valley) was second and V. Eckhotf (Dunedin * North .Intermediate), who was runner-up in the Otago junior championship, third. The standard of diving in boys’ and girls’ division showed an improvement generally, and the winner of the girls’ event, L. Cornish (Dunedin North Intermediate) showed considerable ability on the boards, the run,ner-up, M. Tyson (Musselburgh) also diving well. Miss Cornish showed a proficient style and plenty _ of dash in winning the 25yds championship, girls under 13, in the fast time of 17sec, and one of the best free style performances of the evening was 'that of Edna Goldthorpe (Kaikorai) in the 33 l-3yds girls’ championship under 14. This girl has an easy and rhythmic style and considerable sprinting ability, and in winning her event in 23sec she put up time as fast as that registered in the boys’ event in the same age class. D. Marslin (Dunedin North Intermediate) took second place in the under 13 and 14 girls’ free style championships, both good performances.

Tho 25yds girls’ championship under 11 was won by M. Jenkins (North-east Valley) in 24sec, this determined little swimmer being a daughter of the president of the Otago Swimming Centre (Mr W. A. Jenkins). So far as the children were concerned, the most popular event on the programme was the display of fancy and burlesque diving given by a troupe from the Kiwi Club, comprising Reg. Geddes, V. Agnew (Otago intermediate boys’ champion), and A. Thomas. Geddes and Agnew were both in good form, executing. a number of difficult dives, and the humorous touches were provided by Thomas, who was given a great reception by the spectators at the completion of his turn. Thomas was in another humorous novelty with Jim Purdie, an Arthur Street competitor, the latter (drawn by an invisible rope)_ amazing the onlookers by the speed with which he covered a lap on the back stroke. An invitation 100yds short-limit handicap was won in fine style by E. Tease, of the Dunedin Club, from the scratch mark in 60 4-ssec.

Several fine swimming demonstrations were given, Miss i. Purdie, P. E. Mathieson, and Reg. Geddes, of the Kiwi Club, staging displays of free style, back stroke, and breast stroke respectively, while the brilliant young Otago intermediate hack stroke champion, K. Leckie, of the Dunedin Club, made an attempt on the New Zealand intermediate hoys’ 100 yards hack stroke record of 69 3-ssec, established by G. Low, of Canterbury, in 1932. Although unsuccessful in his attempt, Leckie gave a first-rate display of back stroke, and his time of 74 l-ssec set a new Otago intermediate record. At the close of the programme, the results of the cup contest were announced by Mr H. D. Morgan, vicepresident of the Schools’ Sports Association, who congratulated the winning school, and also thanked those who had given demonstrations on both nights, making special mention of the efforts of Mr A. Thomas. Results BOYS’ SECTION. 25 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. Boys under 11. Record, W. J. Jarvis (Albanv Street). 16sec. 1926. FINAL. N. Marslin (Normal) 1 L.
