ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS
“ Beetroot.”—There are two reasons why beetroot often runs to seed instead of swelling into good roots: (1) Climatic conditions are often the reason. The plants received a check in their growth. When this occurs the plants will certainly run to seed. (2) The soil for beet growing should be rich and free. If tho soil is poor the majority of the plants will run to seed. Animal manure should be worked in the previous season for beet growing.
“ Constant Reader.”—There is no doubt that you pruned back your hydrangea far too hard. Many of the varieties will not stand severe pruning. The spindly or weak wood only should be taken out, as the strong leaders provide the flowering wood for next season.
“ M.”—The specimens arrived in a dry condition, but it has the habit of linaria moraccane (hybrids).
