ATHEISTIC COMMUNISM.
TO THE EDITOK. Sjr,—“ Anti-humbug ” seems to think Communism atheistic, and assumes Capitalism to be Christian. Can your correspondent inform me how many acres of wheat have been burnt or how much cotton has been ploughed in in the Soviet Union while people were going hungry and naked? Or again, could he tell me how much the collective farmer in the U.S.S.R. gets for not raising crops and cattle ? Does the Kholhorz get a better price for not raising pedigree stock than it does for not raising mongrels? Communism calls wilful destruction by its proper name, sabotage. So-called Christian Capitalism condones the practice so that the supply may be short, causing prices to rise. Your correspondent talks of the bjood-drenched streets of Russia. I ask him; Who drenched the world in blood from 1914 to 1918? Was it not the Conservative and professing Christian Governments? At that time there was not a Labour Government in the world with the exception of some Australian States, and I do not think “ Anti-humbug ” will blame them. Was Leopold.a godless Communist when he had the feet and hands cut off children in the presence of their parents because enough rubber was hot being brought in; and were they Marxian Socialists who roasted alive the natives in. the Putumayo district of Peru for the same cause? Finally, according to the Dean of Canterbury two nights ago, what about Franco, who shelled a convent, machine-gunned women and children in the name of “ Christ, the King ” P What about the Highland landlords in Scotland who forbade marriages in their parishes on the pain of eviction? If Communists are godless, unlike some bitter anti-Marxists they do not worship the pagan god Wotan. It was a professing Christian Tsar who would not allow a Jewess to study at a university unless she first took* out a prostitute’s passport, and it was the Communist State that abolished this. Your correspondent talks of , the benign conditions here. Well, I met one to-night on my way home from work. A returned soldier discharged last Monday from hospital, had been suffering from pleurisy, hardly fit to walk or talk. He had a baby three months old, and nothing in the house. Your correspondent says Communism is determined to root out Christianity. The task is superfluous, as our law is not founded on Christianity but on the ancient pagan Roman law of property. Communism is in agreement with the Bible, as both say: “He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him.” Christ said to Godfearing capitalists who paid lip-service only: “ Ye serpents, ye gerenation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” Some never hear the hum of the bug because of the bee in the bonnet.—l am. etc., Popoffski.
