SCHOOLS’ SWIMMING

SUCCESSFUL CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING GOOD STANDARD REVEALED Some particularly good performances were registered afc the opening session of the Otago State primary schools Swimming championship meeting at the Municipal Baths last evening, and the atandard throughout was a good one, especially in view of the _ disorganisation caused in the activities of junior swimmers through the infantile paralysis epidemic this season. To some extent, thia also had its effect upon the entries, but, nevertheless, some 4oU nominations were received, and competition keen as ever, the large crowd of spectators who packed the baths being frequently roused to enthusiasm by the closeness of the finTh”e carnival began most auspiciously, the Dunedin North Intermediate team setting a new record in the junior boys’ relay, their time of 34sec, put up in the first heat, displacing the mark of 34 l-ssec, established by Albany Street in 1932, Another record was equalled during th© "evening,'Noeline Peat (Macandrew Road) putting up an exceptionally fine swim in the_ 25yds girls’ breast stroke championship under 14, winning her heat in 21sec, which equalled the record established by Olive Buckland (Albany Street) in 1932, Miss Buckland winning a New Zealand junior championship the following year. The merit of Miss Peat’s performance is enhanced by the fact that she is not 12 years of age, and she showed her all-round proficiency by winning a heat of the 25yds girls’ free style championship m SOsec, another very good effort in the latter event being that of N. Lane (High Street), whose time in her heat was 19 3-ssec. In the 25yds breast stroke, girls under 14, Annette Armour also swam splendidly to win her heat in 22sec, only a second •lower than the record. One of the hest performances of the evening was that of Edna Goldthorpe (Kaikorai), who holds the Otago junior f iris’ back stroke title, and who showed er versatility by winning a heat of the 33 l-3yds girls’ championship, under 14, in 23 sec, the second fastest time for the distance put up by either boy or girl during the evening. L. Cornish (Dunedin North Intermediate) won her heat of the 25yds girls under 13 in the smart time of 17 4-ssec, and D. Marslin, of the same school, swam well to take first place in her heat in 19sec. Several very good performances were also returned in the boys’ events, one of the outstanding competitors being R. Peat (Macandrew Road), a brother of the swimmer who performed so well in the girls’ section. This boy won his * heat of the 50yds breast stroke championship, Under 14, in the good time of 43 4-ssec, which was only 3 l-ssec outside Roy Geddes’s record. He met with keen competition in his heat from H. Newell (St. Clair) and J. Purdie (Arthur Street), both of whom also swam well. Peat’s performance was a particularly good one, as he is still under 13, and' it was in the under 13 class that he won a heat of the 33 1-Syds free style championship in 23 2-sgec. Although the time was slower than in Peat’s heat, D. Warwick (Arthur Street) gave a good display to win his heat of the 50yds breast stroke championship, under 14, in 49sec. y. Houston was one of the most promising free style swimmers, this Arthur Street representative winning his heat of the 33 l-3yds championship, under 14, in 22 4-ssec, and later accounting for his heat in the under 13 event in 24 3-ssec. N. Marslin (Normal) was another competitor who showed proficiency both at breast stroke " and free style. He won a heat of the -oyds breast stroke, under 12, in 23sec and his heat of the 25yds free style, under 11, in the good time of 17 4-ssec. It Plaister (Arthur Street) returned in the 25yds breast stroke, under if, and swam well, while in the under II free style event L. Williams (Normal) shaped well in winning his heat in 19 2-osee. The 25yds boys’ free style under 12 produced good swimming, R. Barrett (Hunedin North Intermediate) clocking 16 3-ssec for his heat, and R. Blanchett, of the shme school, 17sec in another peat. The finals will be decided to-night, and competition should be most interesting, with the points likely to be more widely scattered than usual. . Demonstrations of swimming and diving were given by several local swimmers, and these were greatly appreciated by the youngsters. Miss'lslay Purdie and P. E. Mathieson (both of the Kiwi Club), who recently established New Zealand records in Auckland, gave displays of free style and back stroke respectively, and Reg. Geddes (Kiwi) gave a demonstration of breast stroke. The diving exhibition was staged by Miss Gwen Rix (of the Dunedin Club), holder of the national ladies’ title; D. Freeman (Kiwi), the Otago men’s champion; and Reg. Geddes, while the lighter touch on the boards was provided by A. Thomas (Kiwi), whose burlesque act proved most popular with the children. The organisation of the meeting was first class, the secretarial arrangements being in the hands of Mr L. Hubbard, who had associated with him a firstjplass band of officials.
