IMPORTATION OF USED CARS
DEALERS PROTEST STRONGLY RESTRICTIVE MEASURES’ POSSIBLE [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, April 9. The Acting Minister of Customs (the Hon. M. Fagan) stated to-day that strong representations had been made to the Government respecting the importation of used motor cars. It had been stated that such vehicles are being imported in increasing quanties and are disturbing the business of established motors dealers and prejudicing the work of bona fide motor car assemblers. Requests have been made that the importation of used or secondhand cars should be prohibited. The Government is conducting a thorough investigation, and it should be distinctly understood by importers of used vehicles that, if it is found necessary in the interests of local manufacturers and traders and the public generally to impose restriction, the Government reserves the right to take such steps as will make any such restriction immediately effective.
