OBITUARY

THE REV. J. A KEMPTHOENE The death occurred on Wednesday of the Rev. John Arnold Kempthorne, : vicar of St. John’s Anglican Church,; Milton. He was taken seriously ill a fortnight ago, and the news of hist death was received with regret by all sections of the community. Mr Kempthorne, who was born at Reefton in 1879, w r as the eldest , son of Archdeacon and Mrs Kempthorne, hia father at that time being in charge of the Nelson diocese. He was educated at Nelson College and afterwards at St. John’s College, Auckland. He was ordained a deacon in 1903 and a priest of the Anglican Church in 1905. Hia first appointment was as curate at StMark’s Anglican Church, Remuera* Auckland. From 1907 to 1910 he waa curate at Heckmondwike, Yorkshire.; On returning to New; Zealand in 1910 he married Miss E. A. Houchen at Takapuha. Other held 1 by Mr Kempthorne included assistant curate at New Plymouth, vicar at Inglewood and at Taumarunui, Morrinsville, and Te Kuiti, and also assistant curate at Feilding. In 1931 he( was appointed vicar of St. John’s Anglican Church, Milton. During his residence in Milton kill Kempthorne took an active interest in l the social amenities of the district. He( was a keen playing member of the( Milton Bowling Club and a leading violinist in the local Orchestral SocietyHe is survived by his widow and al family of two sons and three daughtersThe members of the family are: Messrs* John and Clement Kempthorne (Dunedin), Misses Margaret (Melbourne)* Mary, and Grace Kempthorne (Milton) . : The funeral took place this afternoon at the Anderson’s Bay Crematorium* and was conducted by Dean Cruickshank.
