IN HEAVY SEAS

TRAWLER OVERSHOOTS HARBOUR ENTRANCE HARD ASHORE OFF GISBORNE [Per United Press Association.] GISBORNE, March 12. The trawler ashore off Gisborne, the Marino, is a vessel of 10 toAs recently purchased by W. Costello, of Rotorua, and she was en route to her new headquarters at Tauranga. Captain A. F. Johnson was in _ charge, and others aboard were Captain James Rundell and T. Gibb, R. Gibb, H. Prince, and J. Roy. All day yesterday the trawler battled in heavy seas, and being overtaken by darkness off Gisborne the captain decided to put into port rather than continue the tussle with the sea conditions. He attempted to follow the Pakura into tho harbour entrance. Confusion was caused, however, by doubt as to the position of the harbour lights, and when the larger vessel made her turn the trawler overshot the mark and became involved in the broken water off the beach. A considerable surf was running, and though the engine was immediately reversed the vessel was carried hard ashore.

During the night a number of seas have broken over tho ship, but no damage is reported. As soon as the Marino’s plight was indicated by blasts on her siren a young man, J. Flavell, made his wav to the vessel, advised those aboard of their position. and took a line ashore as a means of escape should the situation become serious.

The vessel still appears to be in no danger, but attempts at refloating must necessarily await moderation of the heavy sea. [An earlier message is on page 13.]
