LYNCH LAWS OWNERSHIP A Sydney girl has just lost a gift that might have been worth £IO,OOO, or even more, because of the legal difficulties involved in a minor’s ownership of a racehorse, states a Sydney writer. The champion two-year-old racehorse, Lynch Law, was to have raced exclusively for Miss Nancy Lewis, daughter of a wealthy contractor, Mr Alan Lewis, but, because of the formalities involved, the colt has reverted to her father, and the rich stakes the colt now earns will go to the parent’s credit.

Mr Lewis got trainer J. T. Jamieson to buy Lynch Law in New Zealand as a yearling last January, for 500 guineas

April 9, 10.—Manawatu R.C. April 10.—Reefton J.C. April 15, 17.—Whangarei R.C. April 17.—Waimate R.C. TROTTING. March 13.—Wanganui Trotting Club. March 13.—Timaru Trotting Club. March 17.—Wyndham Trotting Club. March 20.—Cheviot Trotting Club. March 20.—Wanganui Trotting Club. March 27, 29. —Hawera Trotting Club. March 27, 31.—N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club. April 17.—Manawatu Trotting Club. Not until the colt had commenced training and began to show excellent speed promise did he conceive the notion to give him to his daughter to race in her name throughout his career. It was a handsome gesture, for when he began racing Lynch Law remained unbeaten in three starts. But, unfortunately for those plans, legal difficulties arose. Miss Lewis is only 18 years of age, and in the meantime went abroad to finish her education. When Lynch Law began winning she was in Switzerland. As a minor she had no authority to give a power of attorney. Thus there was no one to control the racing of the colt, and the question might have arisen whether the clubs, whose stakes he wotij had- to establish a trust fund to receive payment of his prizes. Then there was the matter of whose was the responsibility in relation to racing control. Finally there was a consultation, and it was decided that Lynch Law should remain in the ownership of Mr Lewis. Whether there will he a transfer when Miss Lewis comes of age may not matter, for he will be nearly six years old then, and might have won Derbies, Cups, and weight-for-age classics and retired from the turf. But the case was a novel one, and I can recall none similar in racing annals.

JOTTINGS It is reported from Riccarton that Grey Boy, now trained by D. O’Connor, is slightly amiss and will not be sent south to the Riverton meeting. Ladies will be admitted free to all parts of the course at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow. There are . a few veterans in the Riverton Cup this year. Great Star is 11, Admiral Drake 10, and Toreador nine. Queen of Song had no engagement on the opening day of the Wellington meeting, but she has gone to Trentham to run in the Autumn Handicap to-morrow. Pahu and Quinopal are the veterans engaged in this-year’s Great Western Steeplechase, each being 11 years old. Royal Limond and Miss Western are 10 and Trisox nine years old. On the second day of the Riverton Meeting last year Royal Limond gave Pahu 101 b over 2} miles, Pahu having won the, Waiau Steeplechase on the first day. Royal Limond has since won the Grand National Steeplechase at

Riccarton, and in the Great .Western Steeplechase this year there is 201 b between the pair.

Ashaway had 7.8 when he won the Winton Cup by a short neck from Amy Johnson 8.2 and Toreador 7.5 last month. He has 8.1 in the Riverton Cup,, and ‘will meet a, much stronger field. Wild Career, who has since won at Gore, gave Ashaway 21b in the Winton Cup and finished fifth. In the Riverton Cup Wild Chase will concede Ashaway 11b.

Queen of Song, 9.8, won the Riverton Cup last year from Trivet 8.7 and Wall Street 7.4. This year Travenna heads the handicap with 9.6, and Trivet has 8.5 and Wall Street 9.0. Milford is the only other starter last year in this year’s race, and his weight has been dropped from 51b above the minimum (7.0) last year to the minimum this year (7.7).

Wail Street, easily the best handicap horse trained in Southland this season,, is engaged in both the open sprint handicap and Riverton Cup. He has 9.0 in the latter race, but on recent form is entitled to all of it, and if this race is selected for him he will have many friends.

Santoft, who heads the handicap in the Waiau Steeplechase, to be run at Riverton on Easter Saturday, has shown ability over hurdles, hut has yet to be seen out over country. He comes from a stable that is noted for good schooling, and if he can jump the Riverton country his pace will make him hard to beat.

For their wins at Hutt Park, Gallant Knight and -Starwyn were each penalised 12 yards in their races at the Timaru meeting to-morrow. Starwyn’a reassessment represents 48 yards, as ho was giving away three seconds to enter the class. The penalty will not stop either horse from being elected favourite if he goes to the post.

Linguist has yet to win ■ over 10 fur-< longs, but in her races over a mile has been finishing on strongly. With _ 8.7 in the Riverton Cup she has received her full share of weight, as she has yet to beat a good field. With 8.8 in a mile race at Winton last month she was beat a long-head by Half Note (8.3), and in the Riverton Cup meets the Paper Money mare on 41b better terms.

Mr F. Williamson has _ completed plans for leasing the Robespierre—Toti dal Monte yearling filly to Mr P. F. Campbell, Jhe owner of Davolo. The filly, a sister to Rebel Song and a halfsister to Silvox and Screamer, shows a lot of quality, and in every way she looks a good prospect.

Few clubs appear to have realised the effect that the increased _ penalties in the handicapping system is having on their programmes (says the ‘ StarSun’). Under the old schedule the winners of the 3min 43sec classes, one mile and a-half, were penalised 48yds, ■which put them on a 3min 39sec mark, but at the commencement of the present season the penalty for winning a ,3min 43sec class was increased to 60yds, hence a horse is brought hack to 3min 38sec for 12 furlongs. Notwithstanding the change, a majority of clubs continue to provide races with a 3min 39sec limit. A similar increase in penalties for faster classes has also been made, and officials responsible for arranging programmes should become conversant with the ; new system of penalties and provide races for horses that qualify for the various marks.
