[By Draw.]

Club secretaries, or those in c b»re» of the social activities of their clubs, are invited to send along notices m reference to anj club events. relating to the rules of the g»®* WI “ be welcomed. Correspondence addressed to “ I>raw” must rewh th» office not later than noon on Tuesdaj each week.

Fixtures. March 13.— Adess Shield, rink chamP * MarcS Is!—Dunedin v.. South Otago v. North Otago. Finals leads and seconds, —Otago v. Canterbury (Eedpath Shield), at Christchurch. 'March, 25, to 30.—Easter tourney. D March *26* to 29.—Central Otago tournament on Clyde and Cromwell greens. Questions and Answers.

“ Drive.” Under the circumstances you mention, the jack is “burnt,” hut the head is not necessarily dead. There are a number of things to be considered in the- case you- mention betore the head can be declared dead. Please give me fuller details and I then may be able to give yon a definite reply. “No 2.”—Yes, the Centre has every right to decide any question that is not governed by the rules of the game. Saturday Competition.

In last i week’s notes J® s 2.®' tiohed that Logan Park and West Har- , hour bad tied for first position, with North-east Valley in third place. It will also be remembered that the nrst round of games in this competition was only partially played. At a meeting of the Centre Executive, held last Saturday,'the position of clubs mentioned was gone into, and after the delegates ot these clubs had expressed their opinions on the situation and the matter had been discussed from all angles, it was decided that the two leading clubs play off to-morrow, one section at .Logan Park and .the other at, West-Harbour. Followers of. the game in .this centre, I am sure, will be pleased with the decision arrived at. The Valley Chib showed a fine sporting spirit when, through its representative,- it intimated that though it was in third position, it did not desire- to have the first round of matches completed, but would be pleased to see the two top clubs play off The conditions governing the Saturday matches apparently require some adjusting.

Sinflles Championship. The Jjiunedin Centre’s champion of champions, competition commenced last Saturday on the Anderson s_ Bay and Caledonian greens. On the former, at the end of. the day’s play, there remained C. Tyrrell (Roslyn) with two lives, and J. Masterton (Eaikorai), J. Veitch (West Harbour), S. Hutchinson (Logan Park) with one life each. At the Caledonian green W. Foster (Caversham) finished the day with two lives,, and , the one-lifers are D. vormack (Kaituna), J. Best (Otago), A. T. Free (Outram)., . . . , : It Tvas-thfe intention of the Centre to play the balance of the games on the St. Clair- green on Monday last but owing to the weather it was decided to postpone them until Thursday. An examination of several of the score cards shows quite different-totals in some Of the games than those handed to the Press. It seems very unfair that some cards should be made ont so as to make the scores appear more even.

Leads and Seconds Tourney. 'This tourney was commenced on six greens' last Saturday. The sectional play was four games of one and a-hali hours each, and these were concluded. The section ties and the post-sectional games will be decided on the Caledonian green to-morrow . afternoon. There is no doubt that this little tourney is popular, there being abonr 200' players taking part. It affords our Saturday leads and seconds a fane opportunity of ’proving to the club selectors that at least some; of them are worthy of: higher selection than th'ey get in the Shield: game. Quite a number who tbok part in the com? petition showed that they are capable of taking charge of a rink or taking up a third position. The following skips went through the day without defeat Haig; (Kaitfana), MLean (Port Chalmers), Davis (Balmacewen), Booth (Tainui), Kinaston (Balmacewen), Austin (Caver sham), while Clark (Leith), Dryden (Opoho), and Scurr (Dunedin) tied with three wins each fbr the section played at the Valley green.

Notts. The Kaituna Club’s old green is still a fine one, and many of the visitors from Invercargill last week-end were loud in. their praise about the wonderful This club’s new green , is looking well, and in another season : L or two should b© on© of tho best in the centre. Sevto rinks at least will be competing in the Easter tourney from the ranks of Invercargill players. One is almost certain to come from Edendaie, and perhaps two from the Hokonm Club (Gore). . „ „ _ Itf jjs ‘ said that the South Otago players will be here for Easter in large numbers as an appreciation of the number of rinks that assisted at the South Otago. Centre’s tourney last month. Players should remember that entries for the Easter tourney close with the centre secretary next Wednesday night,at 5 o’clock. The writer has heard of a few complaints about the damaging of greens by some of the players in the competitions held last Saturday, due pnn- ' eipally to non-adherence to fOot-on-the-mat rule and dragging after delivery. . , Dave Thomson won the Phoenix Club’s chamnionship this season. This player will her-remembered for his good bowling while resident at Invercargill. -Dave in his -younger days was a keen cricketer in Dunedin, and was for a time secretary, of the Otago ■Cricket Association; ' • What about a match on© of these ;days between players who in their younger days followed the football icodes of Rugby and Association? It ! is surprising. the number of football players who are. now in the ranks of ibowling, and a friendlv game between ; tbe two ■ codes might do a lot to help iother old footballers to join some of ! fche bowling clubs in this centre.

.Otago v. Canterbury. i This match will be played at Christ•church next Saturday, and though the Canterbury teams for the morning and afternoon games have appeared in iprint' there is yet no sign of the Otago ■rinks. No doubt the selectors were waiting until the Otago-Southland match had been played before selecting the team to do battle against Canterbury. It is usual in tins fixture to play eight rinks in the morn-

ing and another eight in the afternoon, •the aggregate points of the two games to count for the Redpath Shield. If these-interprovincial matches are to continue, then only players fit tor interprovincial honours should be selected, and the local selectors are to be congratulated on .their work • m picking tho team against Southland. Though Otago was defeated (by a very small margin) there proved to be very few real weaknesses in the selection. Had the champion of champions contest not been played on the same day, there would have been a few players available who would, have strengthened Otago ‘considerably.

Central Otago Notes. A rink from Clyde made another attempt to lift the Captain Jolly 'Memorial last week.' The holders were W. Russell, C. Mitchell, J. Gardner, T: Sunderland (s), the challengers being E. George, W. Harlow, W. George, and N. Paulin (s). The The holders had a lead of 12-4 on the eleventh head, but then Clyde got two s’s and a 2, the leaders replying with two 3’s, which gave them the lead again, 18-16. The game ended 22-18. Ranfurly also challenged, M. Beattie skipping the rink, but the holders always had a commanding lead, the game ending 26-12. The next challenge is from Cromwell. Austin being tho The singles champion of champions was plaved at Roxburgh oil Saturday, when T. Sunderland (Alexander) retained the Hnrraway Best Cup. The games played were: —First round; Wilkinson (Cromwell) 20. Crossan (Roxburgh) 14; Sunderland (Alexander) 21, Campbell (Bannockburn) 11; Feiguson (Miller’s Flat) 27. Davidson (Clvde) 6. Second round: Sunderland 21,‘ Cr6ssan 20; Wilkinson 26, Ferguson 4; Davidson 22, Campbell 10. Crossan and’ Campbell were eliminated. Third rourjd: Sunderland 24, Wilkinson 15 .(on the nineteenth) ; Davidson 20. Ferguson 12. Ferguson _ was eliminated. Fourth round: Wilkinson 21, Davidson 11. Davidson was eliminated. Fifth round; Wilkinson 22, Sunderland' 13’ (on the nineteenth). Final: Sunderland 22, Wilkinson 17. The bowling throughout was of a very high standard and tho final produced bowls worthy of the occasion. Sunderland played very consistently throughout and undoubtedly deserved his win. His record is a very good 0ne—19.35, runner-up to Wilkinson; 19.36, winner; 1937, winner.

Snnderland will probably be an entrant for the Dunedin Easter tourney, in singles, pairs, and rinks.
