FAMOUS HOUSE FLAG. fr—Flown by Esperance Bay.—. A famous house flag that is seldom seen in New Zealand ports is that of the 'Aberdeeu-Comiuonwealth Line flown by the Esperance Bay. It is a house flag that has, been famous for a century and is usually known as the Aberdeen White Star flag. It has no connection with the former White Star Line of Liverpool. The Aberdeen Line was founded more than a century ago by George Thompson and Co., who, in 1835, had a fleet of 10 sailing ships. Perhaps the most notable ship ever owned by this firm was the little clipper ship Thermopylae, 948 tons, built in 1868. For many years she was the rival of the equally-famous Cutty Sark—at first in the China tea trade and later in the Australian wool trade.

Georg© Thompson and Co. owned and sailed many other beautiful clipper ships. Their pioneer steamer was the Aberdeen, barque-rigged, of 3,684 tons, built in 1881 expressly for the Australian trade. They built a second Thermopylae in 1891—a steamer of 3,711 tons. She was wrecked in 1899 and replaced by the first lonic, 4,748 tons, which was renamed Sophocles. The Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Akaroa was formerly owned by the Aberdeen Line as the Eurypides. The last steamers built for Georg© Thompson and Co. were the Sophocles and Diogenes, which are now employed in the New Zealand trade by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company as the Tamaroa and Mataroa.

The Aberdeen Lin© house flag now flown by the steamers of the AberdeonCommonwealth June is red id the upper half and blue p the lower h«Wi and carries a sis&pointed whit© gtar Jn the centre.'
