INHUMAN HUSBAND

DASTARDLY ATTACK IN STREET When a man at Stourport, Worcestershire, recently, was stated to have knocked his wife down in the street and then taken a running kick at her Jace, he alleged that he was beaten practically unconscious before reaching the cells after his arrest. The man. David Jones, was sentenced to a month’s hard labour for causing grievous bodily harm to his wife, and for having been drunk and disorderly. His wife, it was stated, had been seriously hurt. Her right eye was closing, her nose bleeding, and her cheek badly cut when she was picked up. She spent some time in bed in hospital._ Detective-constable Palmer described how he saw Jones, after knocking his wife down, step backward two yards and take a running kick at the woman, kicking her in the face. He also stood over her and kicked her several times.

Detailing the events which led up to tho attack, the wife said that they had been beet-pulling for the previous seven or eight weeks. Her husband drew his wages and caught a bus to Stourport, leaving her without money. She followed, and after visiting several public houses eventually found him in one, where he gave her 5s to get the week-end groceries. After buying two little toys for her children she called at an inn, and as she came out her husband attacked her.

Jones, who pleaded not guilty to both charges, said his wife was not sober. He pushed her, and she felt against the parapet of tho bride, injuring her face. He was trying to pick her up when the officer sprang at him like a tiger.
