LAW STUDENTS

annual meeting of association The annual meeting of the Otago Law Students’ Association was held m the Supreme Court lecture rooms on Monday. The chairman (Mr Meade) welcomed the students who were attending the University for the first _ time, urging them to take an active interest in all University activities. The fact that the law students did not attend lecures in the University buildings tended, he remarked, to isolate them from the rest of the University, and he particularly asked them not to allow this to happen. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted, the credit balance being slightly larger than that of the previous year. In members (it Was Stated) the faculty was very small, but it was well represented by its members in nearly every branch of University life. Through the support given by students the annual ball had been a very successful one. The dinner, however, had not been so well attended, and in this function a slight loss had beep experienced. The election of officers for the following year resulted as follows:—President. Mr J. D. Neil; vice-president, Mr K. W. Stewart; secretary, Mr I. A. Wood; treasurer, Mr D. L. Wood; committee—Messrs ,T. P. Cook, G. S. Miller, J. S. D. More, and C. M. Spear. Several matters were then discussed, particular interest being shown in the suggestion that an annual subscription should be made by all members, the majority of those present being in favour of it. DEBATING SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the Law Students’ Debating Society, presided over by Mr More, was held immediately after the meeting of the faculty. The report and balance sheet, revealing the healthy condition of the society, were read and adopted. Discussion ranged around the moot system of argument, pnd a recommendation was adopted that three such functions be held again this year. The relative merits of the different types of subjects, light and more solid, were discussed, but it was agreed that a mixed programme was the only really satisfactory one. The election of officers resulted; — President, Mr More; secretary, Mr Raymond; committee—Messrs Stewart, Neil, O’Callnghan, and D. Wood. _ During the evening the_ President distributed the following prizes:—Best speaker, Mr More 1, Messrs Neil and Raymond 2; oratorical contest, Mr More; impromptu debate, Messrs More and O’Callaghan; best first-year speaker, Mr O’Callaghan; prizes for best speaker in each moot, Messrs Holden and Meade.
