DURHAM CADETS

WIN IN WHALERS’ RACE Winning by half a length in a hardfought finish, the No. 1 crew' of cadets from the motor vessel Durham managed to keep its record of not being defeated in a rowing race in New Zealand on the present voyage. Two crews from the Durham met one from the R.N.V.R. and one from the Terra Nova Sea Scouts (Port Chalmers) on Satur day afternoon. The race was rowed in naval whalers by the Durham and R.N.V.R. crews, but the Sea Scouts rowed in a ship’s gig, which gave ..a advantage over the crews in the heavier boats. This gig, it is interesting to note, was once used on the Royal yacht Victoria and Albert, and when acquired by the Federal Steam Navigation Company was presented to the Terra Nova Sea Scouts and brought to Port Chalmers last year by the Durham. On that occasion a race was held which resulted in the Sea Scouts boating a Durham crew. The mile course on Saturday was from the retaining wall along the foreshore to the Durham’s bridge. Shortly after the start it was apparent that the race for first place would be between the Sea Scouts and the Durham No. 1 crew. Durham No. 2 rowed in third position, and the R.N.V.R. boat, which was slightly heavier than the others, came last. These positions were maintained throughout the race, the Durham No. 1 whaler winning by half a length in a hard-fought finish. Two of the youths in the winning crew belong to Dunedin. The result was:— Durham No. 1 (Bell, Gale, Colombi, Ball, Grey; Bryant) I Terra Nova Sea Scouts (Fraser, C. Buchanan, Robb, T. Buchanan, Wilson; Reeves) ... ®... 2 Durham No. 2 (Downes, Roberts, Hughes, Underwood, Bevan; Spiller) 3 R.N.V.R. (Leading Seaman Peterson, Able Seaman Conroy, Ordinary Telegraphist Morris, Ordinary Seaman Hessey, Leading Telegraphist Buskin; Sub-lieuten-ant Allan) -1
