RED-HOT POKERS

FOR SANDY SOILS Those who possess a garden the soil of which is light and sandy _ have no need to despair. All that is needed is a few clumps dotted about with red-hot pokers, and a bright display is quickly brought about. Down on the beach line even the plants do amaz-

ingly well, making plenty of reedlike foliage, which holds well throughout the year, finally to throw up floral torches of scarlet and amber when their best days arrive. Well-grown plants will often provide a tall necessary background that will last for several days. Each torch or flame is made up of smaller tubular blossoms set in close spiral form, the lower company being coloured in chrome or yellow, and the upper section made brilliant with orange-scar-let or ensign red. The time for transplanting is in the autumn. One small clump will quickly increase in size, adding section after section to the thickened root stocks which form the body of the plant.
