CHAMPION BAND

WANGANUI WINS TEST AND CUP ST. HILDA PLACED FOURTH [Per United Pkess Association.] NELSON, February 19. The gold challenge cup for the champion New Zealand A grade band was won by Wanganui Garrison as a result of winning the second test to-night with 10 points in hand. Mr Palliser, president of the Bands’ Association, congratulating the winners, said that all bandsmen would be gratified to sec the one-time champions to the fore again. They bad suffered reverses but had risen to the top again in a creditable manner. He congratulated Mr Young, the conductor, and the bandsmen on their performance. The judge (Mr E. P. Kerry) said he bad been impressed by the A grade performances on both nights. The standard to-night was not quite up to the performance in the first test, but the winning band, from a rythmical and detail viewpoint, was outstanding. The soloists, especially the soprano, euphonium, and the cornet, were most impressive. The, work and performance of the bands in general were of a fairly high A grade standard. Result:—

Lord Galway; president, Mr E. Palliser; vice-presidents Messrs T. Lindsay Bnick. F. W. G. M'Leod Walker, and G. Bailey; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. G. Osborne; Management Committee—Messrs 0. V. Baker, A. G. Homer, E. R. Hopwood, T. Goodall, AV. P. M‘Lachlan, and C. Patchett. Wanganui and Palmerston North applied for next year’s contest, the venue of which will be decided later by the executive.
